Nolan McLean
Cowboy Baseball Drops Series Opener To Gonzaga
March 04, 2022 | Cowboy Baseball
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State's late rally fell short Friday as the No. 4 Cowboys dropped a 4-3 contest to Gonzaga at O'Brate Stadium.
The loss snapped the Pokes' four-game winning streak as they fell to 6-3, while GU improved to 7-2.
Offensively, Nolan McLean led OSU with a 2-for-4 effort that included his third home run of the season, while David Mendham added a double and two RBIs.
Kale Davis took the loss in relief of starter Mitchell Stone as he allowed one run on three hits in 2 1/3 innings.
Stone turned in a solid performance, working 5 2/3 innings and tying a career high with six strikeouts; the southpaw gave up three runs on seven hits and did not issue a walk.
The Bulldogs took an early lead on a two-out RBI single by Stephen Lund in the first inning, but OSU did not trail long as McLean stepped to the plate and smashed an opposite field homer to tie the score in the second.
Gonzaga went back on top in the fourth, this time on a two-out, two-RBI hit by Cade McGee.
Following McLean's homer, GU ace Gabriel Hughes worked four consecutive shutout innings and did not allow a hit over that span. Hughes finished with 11 strikeouts in improving to 2-0 on the season.
GU plated what proved to be the winning run in the seventh, getting three-straight singles off Davis to go up 4-1.
In the bottom of the inning, the Cowboys rallied. Following a two-out single by Caeden Trenkle to put runners on the corners, Mendham delivered a two-RBI double into the left-center field gap to cut OSU's deficit to 4-3.
The Cowboys made things interesting in their final two at bats. In the eighth, they put runners on the corners with one out before a double play ended the threat, and in the ninth, OSU had men on first and second before GU closer Michael Spellacy struck out Marcus Brown to end the game.
The two teams return to action Saturday at 1 p.m.
