Spring Preview: Quarterbacks
March 29, 2022 | Cowboy Football
With spring football practice underway at Oklahoma State, okstate.com will take a look at the status of every position group to break down the personnel and how things look heading into the 2022 season. First up, the Cowboy quarterbacks:
Now a redshirt senior, Spencer Sanders enters his fourth season as OSU's starting quarterback in 2022. With a career record of 24-8 as a starter, Sanders already has the third-most wins as a starting quarterback in school history and is nine wins away from setting the record. His 6,911 passing yards rank as the second-most ever for a Cowboy after his junior year and as the fifth-most for all players in school history.
Last season Sanders became the second quarterback in OSU history to earn first team all-conference honors, and he capped the year as the PlayStation Fiesta Bowl Offensive MVP.
A threat with both his legs and his arm, Sanders is one of just two players in Oklahoma State history with more than 6,000 passing yards and 1,500 rushing yards.
Behind Sanders, the Cowboys will have to replace last season's primary backup, Shane Illingworth. Candidates include redshirt freshman Gunnar Gundy, true freshman Garret Rangel and redshirt junior Peyton Thompson. All three had impressive and heavily-decorated high school careers, but none have attempted a pass at the collegiate level.
Gundy's late-game action against TCU last season is the only in-game collegiate experience for any of the backup candidates.
