Cowgirl Tennis Set To Open Conference Play

The Basics
Oklahoma State's women's tennis team (9-1 overall, 0-0 Big 12) is set for a weekend doubleheader to begin conference play starting with a matchup with Kansas State (6-4 overall; 0-0 Big 12) followed by No. 24 Kansas (7-4 overall; 0-0 Big 12). The Cowgirls and Wildcats square off at 5 p.m. (CST) on March 11. Two days later, OSU will host Kansas at 1 p.m. (CST) in Stillwater.

Oklahoma State's women's tennis team rose to No. 7 in the latest ITA Top 25 rankings. Freshman Mhai Sawangkaew earned the highest singles ranking of any Cowgirl as she landed at No. 34, while Cowgirl veteran Lisa Marie Rioux jumped 10 spots to No. 40. Newcomer Oona Orpana remained at the No. 82 spot in the rankings. Both undefeated Cowgirl doubles duos rose in the top 60. Ayumi Miyamoto and Lisa Marie Rioux jumped to No. 22 and Mhai Sawangkaew and Martina Zerulo climbed to No. 38. Mhai Sawangkaew and Ayumi Miyamoto checked in at No. 63. Kansas State is unranked and the Jayhawks checked in at No. 24.
Series History
Oklahoma State holds a 45-6 all-time record against the Wildcats and is 38-18 all-time against the Jayhawks. The last time OSU faced Kansas State dates back to last season when the Cowgirls swept the Wildcats, 4-0. Two days later, OSU took down Kansas, 4-2.

Oklahoma State's 7th-ranked Cowgirl tennis team ran its winning streak to eight after winning three matches in two days at the Blue Gray Tennis Classic. The Cowgirls moved to 9-1 on the season and added another top 25 win to its resume taking down then-No. 18 Wake Forest in the finals. Additionally, OSU completed its fifth and sixth sweeps of the season while outscoring its opponents by a combined 35-3 count during the winning streak. This season, OSU returns Alana Wolfberg, Dariya Detkovskaya, Ayumi Miyamoto and Lora Boggs from last year's team. OSU signed Sofia Rojas, Oona Orpana, Mhai Mananchaya and Martina Zerulo. The veterans and Cowgirl newcomers have played a large role in the team's early success. OSU set the stage this fall for high expectations come the spring season between the three returners and five signees. Freshman Mhai Sawangkaew has answered the call for OSU. Playing court two for the Cowgirls in singles, Sawangkaew holds an undefeated record and enters this weekend following MVP honors at the Blue Gray Tennis Classic and earning her first career Big 12 Player of the Week award. In addition, two-time All-American Lisa Marie Rioux leads OSU on court one in singles with a 4-1 clip on the season, including a win over the nation's top-ranked singles player. OSU has won the doubles point in eight out of its first nine matches, led by two undefeated duos in Martina Zerulo and Mhai Sawangkaew on court one and Lisa Marie Rioux and Ayumi Miyamoto on court two. OSU has nine ITA preseason top 25 opponents on this year's schedule. The Cowgirls showed off their depth at ITA Kickoff weekend competing without two-time all- American Lisa Marie Rioux. OSU went 1-1, finishing the weekend with a 4-0 shutout of 21st-ranked LSU. OSU dropped a hard-fought match against No. 11 Ohio State, 4-1, on day one of play. OSU picked up a 5-2 win over preseason top-25 opponent Princeton to begin the spring dual season.
