Top-Ranked Cowgirl Equestrian Earns Two Victories on the Road

MARTIN, Tenn. - The No. 1-ranked Oklahoma State Equestrian team defeated UC Davis, 11-5, and No. 9 UT Martin, 13-7, on Friday and Saturday at the Ned R. McWhorter Agriculture Complex to bring the Cowgirls' record to 7-1 on the season.Â
"I am proud of the grit our ladies displayed throughout the weekend," OSU head coach Larry Sanchez said. "There were several high scores in both meets, and we received seven of the eight MOPs." Â
The first meet on the schedule was against UC Davis where Flat and Reining competed Friday afternoon and was completed the next morning with Horsemanship and Fences. Â
The Cowgirls won Flat, 3-1, against the Aggies. The only UC Davis point came from Nicole Beales after she bested her opponent, 87-81.5. OSU's Ella Reinauer countered with a season high 79 to beat Kayla Wolfe, and Hannah Coleman secured her first victory of the year, 74.5-60.5. Team captain Abigail Brayman earned her first MOP honor of the meet winning, 89-87, against Carly Sweeney.Â
Reining coincided with Flat and gave the Cowgirls some momentum. Quincee Clark tallied on an OSU point by defeating Macey Newkirk, 69.5-65. The other Cowgirl point came from Jojo Roberson with an MOP-worthy ride of 69. Hannah Lovrien and Molly Mitchell both lost their rides, 67.5-67 and 70-64.5, respectively.Â
The next day, Horsemanship and Fences occurred simultaneously. Natalie Vargo picked up a victory against UT Davis' Ruby Nahum, 73.5-70.5, and Maddie Fussell followed suit with her ride and bested Kayla Hickey, 72-70.5. The lone Aggie point came from Natasha Replogie. After a re-ride, Roberson earned her second MOP-honor of the day and sixth on the season with a 75.5-71 victory.Â
Fences was the final event in the competition in which the Cowgirls secured the win. The only UC Davis point came from Jessie Rechs who tallied an, 84-76, win. Brayman continued to dominate, earning her second MOP of the day with a score of 88 on her ride. Junior Emma Pacyna claimed a Cowgirl point by handily beating Carly Sweeny, 88-79, and Paige Jones was victorious against Keely Laughlin, 82-80, in her first official ride of the year. Â
Directly after the meet against UC Davis, OSU took on No. 9 UT Martin. The meet began with Fences and Horsemanship coinciding, where the Cowgirls took the lead. In Fences, Sydnie Ziegler secured a quick point for the Cowgirls after beating Tyler Anderson.Â
Brayman picked up where she left off with a career-high score of 90 to earn a Cowgirl point and her third MOP-honor of the day. Hope King, Riley Hogan and Sydney North were defeated, 87-84, 86-85Â and 83-80, respectively. Â Â
In Horsemanship, the only UT Martin point came off a 74-72 win from Emma Schaefer, who was awarded the MOP-honor. Roberson started the discipline with a 75-73 win over Skyhawk Kate Davis, and Caroline Nielson bested her opponent, 74-73. Up next, Claire McDowall earned her first official win on the season, 63.5-0, and the first half was topped off when Natalie Vargo defeated her opponent, Paige Benson, 72-69.Â
Next, Reining and Flat occurred simultaneously. In Reining, the Cowgirls took the event, 3-2. After a re-ride Roberson defeated her opponent, 66.5-64, and Mitchell continued the momentum with a 67.5-67 win over Aubrey Malone to collect her first MOP honor of the season; Hannah Lovrien earned another tally with a 69-67 victory. The two Skyhawk Reining points came from Lexi Bailey and Logan Putivinski who each scored a 68. Â
OSU finished the competition by dominating in Flat, winning the event 4-1. Pelzel started the discipline with a win over Haley Kane, 83-76. Fifth year Brayman continued her successful day by defeating her opponent, 86-71.5, and Ziegler was awarded MOP honors after beating Sophia Sundem, 87.5-81.5.Â
Sydney North secured another point for the Cowgirls, besting her opponent, 84-77.5, to conclude the meet, Hope King dropped her point, 85.5-84.5, to Skyhawk Julia Gilman. Â
OSU will be back in action for senior night at home February 19 when it hosts No. 7 Fresno State. The Cowgirls previously beat the Bulldogs, 10-9, in Fresno, California.Â
