Fresh off a third-consecutive trip to the NCAA Women's College World Series, Oklahoma State has reestablished itself among the nation's elite softball programs. After the departure of Jules Callaham – the first two-time Elite 90 award winner in Oklahoma State Athletics history who graduated early to enroll in the OSU College of Veterinary Medicine – head coach Kenny Gajewski has added a talented mix of freshmen and transfers who bring pure athleticism to the do-it-all group.
A decorated high school athlete, Tallen Edwards forwent her senior year of high school to enroll at Oklahoma State at 17 years old. Named the No. 3 overall prospect in Extra Innings Softball's 2023 Extra Elite 100 and the recipient of the 2022 Michele Smith Award, Edwards is a uniquely talented addition to Gajewski's dugout.
The freshman claimed three OSSAA 6A State Championships in three seasons – 2020 and 2021 slowpitch and 2022 fastpitch – with Southmoore High School in Moore, Okla. Playing primarily as an infielder during the Cowgirls' 2022 fall exhibition slate, she showed glimpses of her speed, hitting prowess and defensive abilities. In Edwards, Gajewski has a raw talent who is likely to make an immediate impact for OSU.
Redshirt freshman Alexx Waitman is a solid addition for Gajewski's squad. The Crossing Christians High School graduate and Tuttle, Okla., native joins the Cowgirls in Stillwater after redshirting in her first collegiate season at Oklahoma.
In her senior season at Crossings Christian, Waitman was named to the All-State team and All-District team after batting .644 and stealing 28 bases on the year. In her first game action in a Cowgirl uniform, Waitman was among Gajewski's go-to options for pinch runners during the fall season.
The young but versatile utility group will provide speed on the basepaths, sound defense and reliable hitting that will likely be an integral piece of the puzzle for an Oklahoma State team looking to play in a fourth-consecutive NCAA Women's College World Series.
