Postgame Notes
PHOENIX – Oklahoma State had possession of the ball and a chance to tie or take the lead late, but Wisconsin got the stop it needed to preserve a 24-17 win in the Guaranteed Rate Bowl played in Chase Field Tuesday.
The Cowboys trailed, 24-7, after three quarters but scored 10 unanswered to start the fourth. The OSU defense forced a three-and-out and got the ball back with 2:51 remaining, but senior cornerback Cedrick Dort Jr., picked off a deep pass attempt to stall the Cowboys' chances.
Behind 258 rushing yards (5.5 per rush), Wisconsin controlled most of the game, but when Oklahoma State hit, the Cowboys hit hard. True freshman quarterback Garret Rangel connected with fellow true freshman Stephon Johnson, Jr., for an 84-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter – the longest in OSU bowl history. Rangel later connected with Brennan Presley on a 41-yard strike to set up a fourth-quarter touchdown and then found Rashod Owens for a 41-yard pass that set up a fourth-quarter field goal.
Rangel finished with 229 passing yards and two touchdowns, one of which was an scrambling underhanded toss to fellow true freshman running back Ollie Gordon on a fourth-and-goal play from inside the one-yard line.
With six catches for 74 yards, Presley was OSU's top receiver, with Gordon pacing the ground game with 12 carries and 45 yards.
The first big play of the game for OSU came on defense when Trey Rucker intercepted a Chase Wolf pass attempt in the end zone on UW's second possession of the contest. The Cowboys produced a second turnover when Lyrik Rawls jarred the ball loose from Wolf as part of a sack in the third quarter. The fumble was recovered by Kody Walterscheid.
Safety Jason Taylor II had 12 tackles and 1.5 tackles for loss in the game, with linebacker Lamont Bishop contributing with nine tackles and two tackles for loss. Playing in his final game as a Cowboy, defensive lineman Brock Martin logged five tackles, two tackles for loss and one quarterback hurry.
OSU finished its season with a 7-6 overall record, as did Wisconsin.
