The Cowboys
Â
- The 2022-23 Cowboys will attack the season with a 15-man roster that features the returning Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year, an All-Big 12 selection and a bevy of talent that is poised for a postseason run. Â
- Oklahoma State will introduce a slew of newcomers this season, starting with transfers John-Michael Wright (High Point) and Caleb Asberry (Texas State). Quion Williams, the lone freshman, will also join the trio from Jonesboro, Ark. Rounding out the new faces is Kris Quintana, the team's new video coordinator.
- The Cowboys open with a pair of home games against UT Arlington and Southern Illinois before hitting the road for their first trip to Rochester, MI. OSU is no stranger to Oakland, as the two have squared off two-straight years coming into this season's meeting.
- Under the direction of head coach Mike Boynton, the Cowboys haven't been a team you wanted to fall behind on. In fact, the Pokes are a commanding 69-19 in his five seasons when leading at halftime.
- Oklahoma State brings plenty of experience to the table this season with three consistent starters from last season's team (Avery Anderson III, Bryce Thompson and Moussa Cisse) all returning, as well as key members who have filled the starter's role or made an impact off the bench (Kalib Boone and Tyreek Smith).
- Oklahoma State will hit the road for five days this week as it prepares for the Baha Mar Hoops Bahamas Championship in Nassau, Bahamas. Action is set to begin Friday at 6 p.m. CT on CBS Sports Network against Central Florida. Chris Sylvester, Kyle Macy and Sam Hyman will have the call while Dave Hunziker and John Holcomb will have the call on radio.
- The winner will move on to face the winner of DePaul and Santa Clara on Sunday. The third-place game is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. CT while the championship action is set for 6 p.m. CT.
- UCF comes into the tournament with a 2-1 record after dropping opening its season opener to UNC Asheville in a 98-95 loss in the second overtime period. It responded with a 68-54 win over Florida State and a 70-37 win over Western Illinois on Monday. Central Florida is led by Taylor Hendricks, C.J. Kelly and Ithiel Horton. Oklahoma State and UCF, who is set to join the Big 12 conference, have never played.
- DePaul comes into the week with a 3-0 record with wins over Loyola (Md.), Western Illinois and a 69-53 win at Minnesota on Monday night. Javan Johnson, Umoja Gibson and Da'Sean Nelson have led the way for DePaul.
- Santa Clara will head to The Bahamas with a 2-1 record with wins over Eastern Washington, Georgia Southern and a loss at Utah State. Brandin Podziemski has led the way with 25.3 points per game while Carlos Stewart and Carlos Marshall, Jr. have contributed, as well.
- John-Michael Wright, a High Point transfer, brings experience and poise to the Oklahoma State locker room. In the 2021-22 season, his junior year of eligibility, he played and started in all 32 games for High Point while averaging 34.9 minutes per contest. He shot .410 from the field and .363 from behind the arc as he averaged 18.4 points, 4.4 rebounds 3.4 assists.
- He finished the year with the eighth-best assist-turnover ratio in the Big South, the ninth-best field goal percentage, had the second-most free throw attempts (third-most made), led the conference in scoring average and had the eighth-most assists.
- Alongside Wright from the transfer ranks is Caleb Asberry from Texas State. He started all 29 games during the 2021-22 season, the only Bobcat to do that, as he led the team in scoring with a career-high 13.6 points and also paced the team in minutes played (847), steals (37), three-pointers made (63).
- Asberry was notably a two-time All-Sun Belt (2021: Third Team, 2022: First Team) selection.
- The lone freshman of the group, Quion Williams, joins the Cowboys from Jonesboro. During his high school career, Williams helped lead his team to two state championships and a 30-3 record.
- Moussa Cisse has dominated through three games with two double-doubles to his name so far.Â
- As of Tuesday morning, OSU is tied for the lead for most blocks in the conference alongside Texas Tech. Cisse has the third-most rebounds in the Big 12 and the most blocks while Bryce Thompson has played the fourth-most minutes.
- Cisse has 10 blocks through his first three games, becoming the first Cowboys since Yor Anei in 2019 to reach the mark in the opening stretch.
- Oklahoma State's two transfers, John-Michael Wright and Caleb Asberry, have combined to shoot 18-for-44 (.409) from the field with 64 points and 13 three-point shots made.
- Meanwhile on the returning side, Bryce Thompson and Avery Anderson III have combined to shoot 30-for-70 (.429) from the field with 75 points.
- Between the four, all of which are averaging at least 10 points per game, the group has combined to score 139 of OSU's first 228 points (61%) to start the season.
- On the rebounding front, Kalib Boone and Cisse have brought in 51 of OSU's first 120 rebounds (43%) of the 2022-23 season.
