Cowgirl Soccer Comes Up Short In Big 12 Tourney
October 30, 2022 | Cowgirl Soccer
ROUND ROCK, Texas – Oklahoma State dropped a 2-1 contest to West Virginia in the quarterfinals of the Big 12 Soccer Championship Sunday at the Round Rock Multipurpose Complex.
With the loss, the Cowgirls, the tourney's fifth seed, fell to 11-4-4 on the season, while the fourth-seeded Mountaineers improved to 8-4-7.
Neither team created much offensively in a scoreless opening half, with WVU owning a 6-1 advantage in shots and forcing OSU goalie Jordan Nytes into three saves.
The Mountaineers would get on the scoreboard first in the 65th minute as Dilary Heredia-Beltran delivered a corner kick that Lauren Segalla headed past Nytes.
With just under seven minutes remaining, WVU doubled its lead when, after a foul in the box, Jordan Brewster stepped up and converted the penalty kick to make the score 2-0.
OSU answered just 92 seconds later when Olyvia Dowell, who returned to action after missing the previous three games with injury, took a pass from Xcaret Pineda and smacked a left-footed shot that found the back of the net. The goal was Dowell's eighth of the season and cut the Cowgirls' deficit in half.
But OSU could not find the equalizer over the final 5:12 as the Mountaineers advanced to the semifinals.
WVU finished with an 11-4 edge in shots in the contest, while both teams recorded six corner kicks.
