STILLWATER – Six Oklahoma State student-athletes are among the 50 recipients of the Oklahoma State University Alumni Association's Seniors of Significance distinction for the 2022-23 academic year.
Emily Forster and Amelia Jauregui of Cowgirl cross country and track & field, Madison Neighbors and Morgyn Wynne from Cowgirl softball, and Maggie Grappe and John Traber Smithson with the Oklahoma State spirit squad have all been chosen as members of the Senior of Significance class of 2022.
The group of six ties of the second-highest total number of OSU student-athletes awarded the honor in a single year. With this year's selections, Oklahoma State Athletics' boasts 29 Senior of Significance in the past 10 years.
Forster and Jauregui mark the 11th and 12th Seniors of Significance from the OSU women's cross country and track & field program. Including this year's duo, there have been six women's cross country and track & field recipients in the past six years.
"Emily Forster is an incredibly dedicated, hard working person who just aims really high and has incredibly high expectations of herself," director of OSU cross country and track and field Dave Smith said. "it's not surprise to me she's been named a senior of significance. She's been a leader by example on our team… since she first walked in the door."
"I'm really excited for Amelia as well," Smith said. "She's a bright, intelligent student and she is involved in a lot. She tries to do it all and it's exciting to see her recognized for her hard work.
Wynne and Neighbors join Cowgirl softball's first ever Senior of Significance Chelsea Garcia, who was bestowed the honor in 2013.
"It's crazy to think that we could have two of these students – the fact they touched our program at one point or are doing that now – really makes me happy," Cowgirl softball head coach Kenny Gajewski said. "It tells me we're recruiting the right people more than just the athlete. It's exciting to see that.
"Madison gave up an athletic scholar to chase a dream. Her dream wasn't to just be an engineering student, it was to be the best ever at OSU. When she came in and retired and told me that, there wasn't anything I could say. That was the right reason."
"In Morgyn Wynne's case, the fact that she can balance and manage school and softball and a social life – and on top of all that, represent our school and our conference – is truly an amazing thing. She's got a big future ahead of her."
Grappe is the third OSU cheerleader to be named a Senior of Significance, joining Brya d'Abrosca from the class of 2018 and Jenny Kise from the class of 1998. Smithson is the second Pistol Pete to earn the distinction; he joins Ryan Stafford, who was honored in 1998.
Fifty-one OSU student-athletes have been recognized since the inception of the Seniors of Significance award in 2003, a span of 21 years.
