October 23, 2022 | Cowgirl Soccer
STILLWATERÂ - In its final regular season home match, Oklahoma State battled but ultimately fell to 18th-ranked Texas, 2-1, Sunday afternoon at Neal Patterson Stadium.
Â
With the loss, OSU is 10-3-4 overall and 3-2-3 in conference play. The Longhorns moved to 12-1-4 and, at 6-0-2 in the league, clinched the Big 12 regular season championship.
Â
After nearly grabbing the lead in the third minute following Grace Yochum's shot that was saved by UT goalkeeper Savannah Madden, who had four saves in the match, the Longhorns took control and outshot the Cowgirls 6-3 in the first half.
Â
Texas took the lead in the 30th minute following Jilly Shimkin's solo effort that just got past freshman goalkeeper Jordan Nytes, who had one save in the match.
Â
With a strong wind blowing in excess of 30 miles per hour at its back, a rejuvenated Cowgirl team dialed up the pressure at the break, notching seven shots in the second half.
Â
Despite OSU's pressure, Texas increased their lead to two following Trinity Byars 14th goal of the season in the 62nd minute.
Â
OSU kept the shots coming, and in the 79th minute, finally found the back of the net. Freshman Xcaret Pineda fired a shot from 25 yards out that found the top-right corner for her second goal of the year.
Â
With just seconds left in the match, UT midfielder Ashlyn Miller was issued a red card following her second yellow card of the contest, giving OSU one more chance to find the equalizer. However, on the last play of the game, Nytes' free kick into the box was cleared by the defense.
Â
OSU's final regular season match comes Thursday at Baylor, with kickoff in Waco scheduled for 7 p.m.
