WACO, Texas – Oklahoma State concluded the regular season with a 1-0 win over Baylor Thursday night at Betty Lou Mays Field.
With the win, OSU improved to 11-3-4 overall and finished fifth in the Big 12 standings at 4-2-3. The victory was the first for the Cowgirls in Waco since 2011 as they had gone 0-3-1 on BU's home field since.
Megan Haines' goal in the 66th minute was the difference as the senior scored for the second time in the last three games.
Jordan Nytes posted her sixth shutout of the season, tallying three saves along the way. The clean sheet was OSU's 10th of the season, tying them for the most in the conference.
Neither team created much offensively in the opening half, with the Bears outshooting OSU by a 4-3 margin; all three of the Cowgirls' attempts were on goal.
The second half was a different story, and 20 minutes in, the Cowgirls got on the board.
Xcaret Pineda made a perfect long pass ahead to a streaking Haines, who outran her defender to create a one-on-one opportunity with BU keeper Lauren Traywick. Haines won the battle as she slotted a shot to the near post to give OSU the lead.
From there, the Cowgirls' defense would come up clutch as it faced 10 shots and three corner kicks from the home team over the final 20 minutes of the match but avoided giving up the equalizer.
OSU opens play at the Big 12 Soccer Championship Sunday in Round Rock, Texas. The Cowgirls are the No. 5 seed in the tourney and will take on fourth-seeded West Virginia at 2 p.m. in their opening round match.
