Cowgirls Complete Successful Day At ITA Central Region Championships

STILLWATER – Oklahoma State's women's tennis team competed on day two of the ITA Central Region championships at the Greenwood Tennis Center today.
The day started off strong for the Cowgirls. Two OSU duos picked up dominating wins during the morning action. First-ranked Ayumi Miyamoto and Kristina Novak defeated Elizabeth Mintusova and Kseniia Aleshina from Saint Louis, 8-2.
No. 3 Raquel Gonzalez and Alana Wolfberg routed Bradley's Vipasha Mehra and Daianne Hayashida, 8-3, to move on to the next round. Amber Hochstatter and Sofia Rojas fell to the Missouri duo, Christine Canete and Mae Canete, 2-8.
Miyamoto, Novak, Gonzalez and Wolfberg all advanced to tomorrow morning's round of 16.
In singles play, five of the six Cowgirls had byes in the first round and before beginning play on Friday afternoon. No. 17 Wolfberg won, 6-3, 3-6, 5-4, after Wichita State's Jessica Anzo had to retire due to injury. Next, No. 11 Rojas took down Maria Berlanga of Tulsa in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1.
No. 15 Miyamoto earned a commanding, 6-1, 6-1, victory over Iowa's Anya Lamoreaux. The freshman, No. 7 Gonzalez, defeated Cosima Trinity Calinescu from Southeast Missouri State, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.
Hochstatter lost to Vanesa Suarez of Kansas State, 6-2, 6-2, and then was beaten in the consolation bracket 3-6, 0-6 by Wichita State's Harriet Hamilton. Fifth-ranked Novak battled fiercely but ultimately fell, 7-6 (8), 5-7, 3-6, in a close matchup against South Dakota's Estella Jaegar.
The four Cowgirls who won in singles will advance to tomorrow's round of 32. Doubles play begins at 9:30 a.m. with singles to follow.
