2022 Oklahoma State Softball Position Preview - Catchers
January 21, 2022 | Cowgirl Softball
A third consecutive trip to the Women's College World Series seems attainable for Oklahoma State in 2022. As the countdown to the season continues, check back in regularly at okstate.com for a breakdown of the Cowgirls' roster by position group. A look at the catchers:
Â
With the loss of Reagan Wright and Raquel Dominguez, reloading behind the plate was an offseason focal point for coach Kenny Gajewski.Â
Â
Anchoring the relatively young group at catcher is senior Taylor Tuck. The Stillwater native is entering into her fourth season with the Cowgirls and has been productive. She was error-free in 17 games played in 2021 (12 starts), compiled a .300 batting average and a .433 slugging percentage.
Â
Joining Tuck with starting experience of her own is Florida transfer Julia Cottrill. The 2021 NFCA All-Region honoree and All-SEC Newcomer team member joins the Cowgirls as a junior who is immediately eligible to play. The daughter of Oklahoma State assistant coach Jeff Cottrill earned 50 starts in her sophomore season with the Gators, in which she tallied a .992 fielding percentage with 22 assists and batted .294 including five home runs, 26 RBI and 10 doubles.
Â
Freshman Maggie Herdejurgen out of Crosby, Texas, brings with her notable power at the plate. A two-time First-Team All-District selection and a District 21-5A newcomer of the year as a freshman, Herdejurgen proved her success as a hitter can translate to the college game in the handful of fall plate appearances she tallied in 2021.
Â
Audrey Schneidmiller – another Texan out of Burleson – went 5-for-10 in the fall with four extra base hits and she slugged her way to 1.000 with three doubles and a triple. Schneidmiller's dynamic athleticism is promising.
Gajewski has also brought Averie Sims on to the active roster. Sims – a junior out of Madisonville, Texas – served Oklahoma State softball during its Women's College World Series appearances in 2021. As a consistent presence in the Cowgirls' bullpen throughout the season, Sims earned herself a spot on the roster and remains a viable option behind the dish.
Â
If Oklahoma State is to make a third consecutive trip to the Women's College World Series, it stands to reason that the leadership and production from the catcher position would be an integral piece of the puzzle.
