Cowgirls Wrap Up Successful Weekend At Freeman Memorial Tournament

LAS VEGAS – Oklahoma State's women's tennis team wrapped up a successful start to the spring season at the 19th Annual Freeman Memorial Women's Tennis Championships on Sunday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex at UNLV.
"I'm really happy with how our girls competed and the progress we made this weekend," OSU head coach Chris Young said. "This was a very strong field and this experience will have us prepared to open the season on Wednesday. We are so thankful for our fans that traveled here with us and can't wait to have everyone at the Greenwood Tennis Center on Wednesday."
Freshman Mhai Sawankgaew started off the spring season with a run to the singles championship. Sawangkaew's run started Friday when she picked up a big-time victory, taking down Pepperdine's No. 93 Janice Tjen, 6-0, 3-6, 7-6 (5), followed by a rout of No. 49 Sasha Vagramov of UCLA, winning, 6-4, 6-4.
On Saturday, Mhai Sawangkaew took down Zita Kovacs of UNLV, 6-2, 6-4, to advance to the semifinals where she defeated No. 36 Savannah Broadus of Pepperdine to advance to the finals. In the title match, she was defeated by 31st-ranked Shiori Fukuda of Pepperdine, 7-5, 6-4.
Today, Mhai Sawangkaew and Martina Zerulo got it going early in doubles play, beating UCLA's Ava Cantazarite and Sasha Vagramov, 7-6 (3).
Sofia Rojas finished the tournament strong, picking up a victory by defeating Florida's Carly Briggs, 6-3, 7-5. Dariya Detkovskya added another Cowgirl win, defeating Cindy Hu of UNLV, 7-6 (4), 6-7 (5), 10-7, followed by Martina Zerulo sealing the deal against No. 49 Alexandra Vagramov of UCLA, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4.
Oona Orpana and Dariya Detkovskaya fell to McCartney Kessler and Emma Shelton of Florida, 6-1. Orpana lost her singles match, 6-4,2-6,7-6 (3), to Nikki Redelijk of Pepperdine.
The Cowgirls begin the spring dual season Wednesday against No. 23 Princeton at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
