Sawangkaew Advances To Championship At Freeman Memorial Tournament

LAS VEGAS – Oklahoma State's Mhai Sawangkaew advanced to the championship match at the 19th Annual Freeman Memorial Women's Tennis Championships with a pair of victories on Saturday at the Fertitta Tennis Complex at UNLV.
Sawangkaew started the day by defeating Zita Kovacs of UNLV, 6-2, 6-4, to advance to the semifinals. She took down No. 36 Savannah Broadus of Pepperdine to advance to tomorrow's championship.
The day got off to a hot start for the Cowgirls in doubles as Sofia Rojas and Oona Orpana teamed up to defeat Coco Zhao and Salsa Aher, 6-4. Martina Zerulo and Mhai Sawankgew finished off the undefeated doubles day for the Cowgirls after beating Florida's McCartney Kessler and Emma Shelton, 6-3.
In singles extra matches, Sofia Rojas defeated Bente Spee of Florida in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2. Dariya Detkovskaya continued the Cowgirls' winning ways taking down UNLV's Salsa Aher, 6-2, 7-6 (5).
Oona Orpana dropped a hard-fought match to No. 10 Lisa Zaar of Pepperdine, 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinal. Martina Zerulo fell to Florida's Carly Briggs, 6-0, 6-2.
The action begins with doubles tomorrow at 11 a.m. PST, 1 p.m. (CST).
