STILLWATER – Oklahoma State Cross Country runners Isai Rodriguez and Taylor Roe were named the men's and women's Big 12 Runners of the Week after sweeping the top spots on the podium in the Cowboy Jamboree this past weekend.
Rodriguez shattered the current iteration OSU Cross Country Course record by 24.4 seconds and defeated the rest of a loaded Cowboy Jamboree field by a whopping 31 seconds overall. The field included runners from four ranked teams, including the defending national champions, NAU, and eighth-ranked Tulsa.
The award is Rodriguez's third of the season after being named National Athlete of the Week by the USTFCCCA on Monday. Rodriguez has now won three straight Big 12 Runner of the Week honors after winning the final weekly award at the conclusion of the 2020 season and the first two awards of the 2021 season.
He has also won both events he has competed in this season, winning the Cowboy Preview and Cowboy Jamboree after finishing eighth in last season's NCAA DI Cross Country Championships, all in Stillwater.
Taylor Roe earned her first Big 12 weekly award and second award of her career after being named USTFCCCA Midwest Region Women's Athlete of the Year last season.
Roe won her first event of the 2021 season after placing fourth in the Cowboy Preview to open the season on Sep. 1. The returning All-American and All-Big 12 runner finished second at last year's NCAA DI Cross Country Championships.
She finished 10.9 seconds ahead of teammate Gabby Hentemann and 13.7 seconds ahead of the nearest competitor from another school. The junior's 6K time of 20:25.9 helped the Cowgirls place three runners in the top five in a field that included runners from No. 8 Colorado.
The Cowboys and Cowgirls will return to competition Oct. 18 as they travel to Madison, Wis., to run in the Nuttycombe Invitational.
