September 01, 2021 | Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
STILLWATER – Oklahoma State men's and women's cross country set the stage for the 2021 season with wins over in-state rivals Oklahoma and Tulsa in the Cowboy Preview on the OSU Cross Country Course on Wednesday.
Overall, OSU won both races and took nine of the ten spots in the top five between the men's 5k and women's 3k.
The Cowboys dominated the race as they claimed the first five spots in the men's 5k race. Isai Rodriguez led the way across the finish line, posting a time of 15:03.8. Victor Shitsama, Ryan Schoppe, Alex Maier and Isaiah Priddey were only seconds behind with a time of 15:12.7.
Wyatt Landis and Nick Kenville finished 16th and 20th, with times of 16:41.7 and 17:09.4, respectively.
"Obviously, we finished third at nationals last year, but honestly we felt like we could do a lot better," Rodriguez said. "This year, our goal is to win nationals, but right now we're just taking it day-by-day."
The Cowgirls also won the women's 3k, with four runners placing in the top five. OSU was led by second-place finisher Kelsey Ramirez, who posted a time of 10:56. Ramirez was followed closely by teammates Molly Born and Taylor Roe, with both finishing with a time of 11:03.6, as well as Clarissa Morales with her time of 11:12.6 to round out the top five.
"I think (the team) is looking good this year," Ramirez said. "I think we have a solid group of girls… Probably ten or so that are looking pretty good so I'm pretty confident in us going into the season."
Maddie Salek also finished in the top 10 for the Cowgirls with a time of 11:33.7. Emily Forster and Makayla Pate rounded out the finishers for the Cowgirls, finishing 16th and 20th, respectively.
Looking ahead, the Cowboys and Cowgirls will host the 83rd-annual Cowboy Jamboree Sep. 18th in Stillwater on the OSU Cross Country Course.
