NCAA Champion Cowboy Nick Miller Set for Second-Career Olympics Appearance
July 22, 2021 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track
STILLWATER, Okla. – Oklahoma State throws legend Nick Miller has made his way to Tokyo to compete in the men's hammer throw for Team Great Britain in the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games.
The Cumbria, England native began his decorated track and field career with the Cowboys. He trained and competed under Director of OSU Cross Country and Track & Field Dave Smith and then-Oklahoma State throws coach Lucias MacKay from 2012-2016.
At the peak of his collegiate career, Miller claimed the 2016 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Hammer Throw title that had eluded him in years prior.
With the championship performance, Miller became the 11th Cowboy in program history to stand atop the NCAA Outdoor podium and the first to do so in a throws event.
Aside from his collegiate success, Miller also competed well internationally during the collegiate offseason and beyond his time in Stillwater.
Switching out America's Brightest Orange for the Union Jack, Miller has tallied a number of noteworthy performances as a hammer thrower: 2014 Commonwealth silver, 2015 European U23 Championships gold, 2016 Commonwealth gold and a 2018 World Cup silver.
The OSU record holder in both the hammer throw and weight throw, Miller earned passage to the Tokyo Games on account of his 78.07m throw at the Central Coast Micro Meet in May, which topped the Olympic-standard 77.50m mark.
Heading into familiar territory as an Olympian, Miller will go for glory as he competes to best his Olympic debut performance from the 2016 Rio Games: a 22nd place finish.
Regardless of his finish in the 2020 Games, Miller joins the likes of J.W. Mashburn as the only other OSU Cross Country and Track & Field alumnus to qualify for the Olympic Games more than once.
The men's hammer throw from the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games will get underway with the Group A and Group B qualifying rounds on August 1 at 7 p.m. (CST) and 8:30 p.m. (CST), respectively. Following the qualifying rounds, the men's hammer throw final will take place on August 4 at 6:15 a.m. (CST).
