Lauren Bay Regula After Oklahoma State
July 20, 2021 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER – As the Olympic Games begin this week, Oklahoma State will be represented by six athletes. The first to compete is softball's Lauren Bay Regula, a left-handed pitcher suiting up for Team Canada.
We take a two-part look at Bay Regula this week. For the first installment on her career at Oklahoma State, CLICK HERE. For today's second installment, we'll look at her career after OSU, both on the field and off the field.
On the field
Originally from Trail, British Columbia and a promising prospect in the Canadian youth ranks, Bay Regula had been playing for the Canadian Junior Women's National Team from 1999-2002, while also playing collegiately for the Cowgirls.
Prior to her senior year in Stillwater, she earned a spot on the Canadian Senior National Team in 2002. She gained high-profile experience as part of Team Canada at the 2002 World Championships, the 2003 Pan American Games, the 2004 Athens Olympics and the 2006 World Championships. In 2008, she played in her second Olympic Games, this time in Beijing.
She was a standout for Team Canada at the Athens Olympics, starting five games and earning the win in all three of Canada's victories at the event. At the Beijing Olympics, she recorded two victories in helping Canada to a spot in the bronze medal game. Canada finished fourth and following that near-medal heartbreak, Bay Regula didn't touch a softball again for eight years.
During that time, she married former Dartmouth kicker Dave Regula and the couple had three children – Grace, Jack and Will.
Remarkably, Bay Regula was called back into action for the Canadian National Team in 2016 and helped the squad to a Bronze medal at the World Championships that year. She attended training camp with the National Team in 2019 and 2020 with an eye on earning a spot in the Tokyo Games, which she accomplished as one of four pitchers to make the final roster.
Off the field
Bay Regula graduated from Oklahoma State in 2004 with a degree in international business and now teams up with her husband to own TrAk Athletics, a fitness business near his hometown of Akron, Ohio. An interesting tidbit – the name TrAk combines the name of her hometown (Trail) with his (Akron).
In addition, she started the Strong Mom Strong Family program which ties in identity, habits, and lifestyle to help moms be the best version of themselves.
Bay Regula is open about the postpartum depression she began to suffer from in 2012. It continued until 2018 when she says she hit "rock bottom" and finally got the help she needed. After a long road to recovery, she has said she feels like she has a new lease on life.
She is also open about what's driving her at these Olympic Games – the opportunity to inspire others and be a real-life example of how people can accomplish whatever they set their mind to.
