Kehl, Hakanen Grab Event Titles at Baylor Invitational
April 03, 2021 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
BAYLOR, Texas – In Oklahoma State's day at the Baylor Invitational, Kelsey Kehl and Saara Hakanen earned event titles in the women's javelin throw and women's triple jump, respectively, and a number of other Pokes posted top-10 finishes.
Kehl, the Washington-State transfer, won the women's javelin with a final throw of 45.14m, six meters farther than the second-place finisher. Her performance in the javelin throw today was the third-straight top-10 finish she's recorded in the event this season.
"Kelsey had a couple throws get away from her today that could have been season bests," multis coach Josh Langley said. "She is becoming very consistent which is a sign that a breakthrough isn't far off. I'm happy and she's happy she got the win, but she's got more where that came from."
Joining Kehl in the javelin throw were multis specialists Megan Mann (31.13m) in 10th place and Maddie Meiner (25.09m) rounding out the group in 14th.
Hakanen added to her notable sophomore resume with a win in the women's triple with a 13.00m leap; the mark ranks third all-time in Cowgirl outdoor history and fourth in the Big 12 so far this season.
"It was good to see Saara finally get the win in one of her events," jumps coach Zivile Pukstiene said. "She just came out of quarantine on Thursday, didn't practice with the team all week and comes out and takes the event. She's heading in the right direction. Our goal for Saara is to get her qualified for [West] regionals in all three jumps. Definitely won't be easy among such talented athletes this year, but we're taking this season one event at a time."
Junior Ryan Roane also tabbed a top-10 finish, coming in at sixth with a jump of 11.99m.
There were other notable performances from OSU athletes throughout the day, a total of 31 top-10 finishes from athletes in America's Brightest Orange, 13 of those within the top-five.
A trio of Cowgirl sprinters made their presence felt in the top-10 of the 400 meters. Aaliyah Birmingham finished runner-up in 53.55, Christina Ollison trailed closely in fourth in 54.31 and Nicolette Dixon took eighth in a time of 56.04.
Those same top-10 finishers teamed up with Brooke Givens to represent Oklahoma State in the 4x100 meter relay. The unit finished in 45.46 in third place. Their time is the third-fastest by a Cowgirl relay team in school history and ranks fourth in the Big 12 so far.
A pair of freshman middle distance Cowboys in Cooper Newsome and Triston Read tabbed top-five performances in the men's 800 meters. Newsome, a first-year transfer from the University of Tulsa, finished in fourth place in 1:54.00 and Newsome was right behind in fifth, crossing the line in 1:55.06.
Cowgirl multis athlete Bailey Golden had herself a day from the Clyde Hart Track & Field Center, totaling three top-ten finishes on the day.
In the high jump, Golden earned the third-place finish with a 1.71m leap. The mark is a season best and ranks sixth all-time in school history. Competing among three of her teammates in the long jump, she earned sixth with a 5.66m leap. She ended her day with a seventh-place, 14.17 performance in the 100-meter hurdles. She paced or led the Cowgirls in all three events.
Throws veteran Torrey Hickel set the tone for his teammates in the men's shot put, finishing runner-up after with a 17.86m launch. Michael Releford (15.73m) and Patrick Michaels (15.13m) joined Hickel in the top ten, finishing seventh and eighth, respectively.
Also representing the Cowboys in throws events, freshman Sam Mason snagged a seventh-place finish in the hammer throw with a career best 47.29m mark, the best by a Cowboy this season.
As the Pokes head back to Stillwater, they'll divide and conquer on the road next weekend at the Joe Walker Invitational in Oxford, Mississippi and the North Texas Invitational in Denton, Texas.
