Spring Preview: Quarterbacks

Now a junior, Spencer Sanders enters the 2021 season with 19 total starts under his belt. He looks to build on a year that saw him round out the season by earning Cheez-It Bowl MVP and honorable mention All-Big 12 honors. He finished 2020 at second in the Big 12 with 8.13 yards per pass attempt and third with an efficiency rate of 143.2. His 4,072 career passing yards rank as the second-most ever for an OSU sophomore, behind only the 4,623 Mason Rudolph had from 2014-15.

He enters the year backed up by Shane Illingworth, who played as a true freshman in the 2020 season opener and started twice more after Sanders was injured against Tulsa. Illingworth helped the Cowboys win all three of those games and proved himself more than capable when called upon. He played in five games and finished the year 554 passing yards and four touchdowns.

Ethan Bullock also returns after playing in two games, as well as walk-on Peyton Thompson. The lone addition is Mike Gundy's son, Gunnar Gundy, a freshman with an impressive high school career.
