STILLWATER – Oklahoma State scored its most runs ever in a Josh Holliday-coached game as the 19th-ranked Cowboys posted a 28-0 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff Tuesday at O'Brate Stadium.
The Cowboys' previous high run total under Holliday was 24, which came in a win over Oklahoma in 2015. Holliday is in his ninth season as OSU's head coach.
With the victory, OSU improved to 22-10-1 on the season, while UAPB fell to 4-23.
Max Hewitt had a career night at the plate for the Pokes as the senior went 3-for-4 with a career-high seven RBIs. He was one of nine OSU players who had multiple RBIs in the contest.
The Cowboys tallied 15 hits in the win and also took advantage of 18 walks issued by the Golden Lions, who used seven pitchers in the game.
C.J. Varela picked up his first win of the season on the mound as the senior right-hander worked five innings and struck out five. He allowed two hits and did not surrender a walk.
OSU scored a pair of unearned runs in the first inning before taking control of the scoreboard with a 12-run outburst in the second.
That frame saw the Cowboys send 16 batters to the plate and collect five hits. Hewitt had five RBIs in the inning, getting two on a single in his first at-bat and then smacking a triple with the bases loaded in his second trip to the plate in the frame.
The inning also saw Christian Encarnacion-Strand collect a pair of RBI hits as he extended his hitting streak to 17 games, and Matt Golda had two RBIs on a single.
OSU was held scoreless in the third inning before plating eight runs in the fourth, five in the fifth and one in the sixth.
Cade Cabbiness and Hueston Morrill both homered for the Cowboys in the middle innings.
The two teams conclude the midweek series Wednesday with a game scheduled for 6 p.m.
