Cowboy Wrestlers Set to Take on Olympic Trials
April 01, 2021 | Cowboy Wrestling
STILLWATER – Two members of the Oklahoma State wrestling team will head to Fort Worth, Texas, to compete in the U.S. Olympic Team Trials on Friday and Saturday. Daton Fix will represent the Pokes in the 57 kg bracket, while AJ Ferrari will wrestle at 97 kg.
Fix is an accomplished freestyle wrestler and will be the No. 2 seed in his weight class. In 2019, Fix became the youngest Cowboy to make a United States Senior World Team since John Smith won his first World Team in 1987. He also defeated No. 1 seed Thomas Gilman in a best of three showdown at Final X: Lincoln.
After Olympic redshirting in 2020, he returned to the Oklahoma State lineup in 2021 and went 13-1 as a sophomore. He recently collected the second runner-up finish of his career at the NCAA Tournament on March 20.
"People's dreams are on the line here," Fix said. "Everybody at that tournament has been working for this for their entire career, to make the Olympic team. Everybody is going to be on top of their game and be ready and it excites me. I have been waiting to wrestle in the Olympic trials for as long as I can remember, so I'm going to embrace the moment and leave everything out there."
Ferrari qualified for the trials after winning the NCAA Division 1 championship at 197 pounds two weeks ago. He put together a historic freshman season going 20-1, while collecting a Big 12 championship and the NCAA title. He joined elite company with Richard Hutton and Pat Smith as he became only the third true freshman to win a national title in program history.
In November, Ferrari won the 92 kg championship at the UWW Junior National Championships, outscoring his opponents 37-1 over the course of the tournament. He will be the No. 6 seed in the 97 kg bracket.
Former Cowboy wrestler Jordan Oliver will also be competing at the Olympic Team Trials in the 65 kg division where he will be the No. 3 seed. At OSU, Oliver was a four-time All-American and two-time national champion with a 127-6 career record.
The event will be held at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth on April 2-3. The first day of competition will consist of the challenge tournaments that make up the championship series where winners of a best-of-three series will earn their right to represent the United States men's freestyle team at the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
