ST. LOUIS – Oklahoma State advanced six Cowboys through the championship first round of the NCAA Wrestling Championships Thursday, earning 12.5 team points to sit at sixth place in the team standings.
The Cowboys went 7-3 overall in the opening session, as Wyatt Sheets opened the tournament with an 8-2 win in the pigtail match at 157 pounds before OSU went 6-3 in the championship first round with four bonus-point wins.
The highlight of the morning came from No. 4 Boo Lewallen at 149 pounds as he secured a first-period fall over No. 29 Kody Komara of Kent State in just 1:26, marking the fastest pin of the tournament so far. It was Lewallen's second fall and ninth bonus-point win of the year.
No. 1 Daton Fix (133), No. 11 Dakota Geer (184) and No. 4 AJ Ferrari (197) also provided bonus-point victories for the Pokes, winning via 16-3 major decision, 10-0 major decision and 17-2 technical fall, respectively, over lower-seeded opponents.
Cowboy sophomore Travis Wittlake nearly provided another major decision at 165 points, but still won comfortably with an 8-1 decision over No. 23 Joe Lee of Penn State.
While all those wins went as expected according to the seeds, OSU true freshman Dustin Plott – seeded at No. 18 – gave the Cowboys an additional spot in the championship second round as he upset No. 15 Thomas Flitz of Appalachian State with 7-5 comeback win.
Three other Cowboys also had to wrestle higher-seeded opponents in the opening round, including Sheets, No. 21 Trevor Mastrogiovanni at 125 pounds and No. 29 Austin Harris at heavyweight. All fell short, but Mastrogiovanni made a great effort in a 4-3 loss that included a late scramble attempt to win in the closing seconds against No. 12 Michael DeAugustino of Northwestern.
All nine OSU wrestlers will continue their run in the 2021 NCAA Wrestling Championships Thursday evening, with Fix, Lewallen, Wittlake, Plott, Geer and Ferrari wrestling in the championship second round, and Mastrogiovanni, Sheets and Harris competing in the first round of the consolation bracket.
The next session will begin with the lower five weight classes at 5 p.m. CT, while the next five classes will wrestle at 8 p.m. CT. Fans can watch the rest of Thursday's action live on ESPN2 and can stream every mat live on ESPN.com or through the ESPN app. Cowboy fans can also follow along on Twitter through @CowboyWrestling.
