Cowgirls Set To Open Conference Play This Weekend

The Basics
The No. 31 Oklahoma State women's tennis team (6-5 overall; 0-0 Big 12) opens conference play with a two-game road trip to face No. 2 Texas (12-1 overall; 2-0 Big 12) and No. 11 Baylor (14-2 overall; 2-0 Big 12). The Cowgirls and Longhorns square off at 11 a.m. CT on March 19 at the Texas Tennis Center in Austin and then two days later, OSU travels to Waco to tackle the Lady Bears at 1 p.m. CT at the Hurd Tennis Center.

In the Rankings
Oklahoma State is ranked No. 31 in the Oracle/ ITA Division I Rankings. Texas is No. 2 and Baylor is No. 11. This week marks the first time since March of 2014 OSU has been ranked outside of the top-25 in an Oracle ITA poll. The next ITA Singles and Doubles rankings remain TBD. Due to the limited singles and doubles play so far this season, the ITA office will run sample computer rankings the first week of March to determine appropriate adjustments to the ITA algorithm for the remainder of the season.Â

Oklahoma State is 6-5 and battle-tested as they head into conference play, having faced five top-25 opponents in non-conference. OSU began the season with back-to-back victories over Missouri. The Cowgirls dropped three straight when they returned to action short-handed at the ITA Indoor National Championships due to Covid-19 contact tracing and return protocol. Following the Indoor Championships, OSU earned three consecutive victories before losing a pair of matches to Pepperdine and USC. The biggest storyline has been the emergence of duo Bunyawi Thamchaiwat and Ayumi Miyamoto, who is 6-1 on the season. OSU was picked second behind Texas in the Big 12 preseason poll. OSU heads into conference play with a talented young group, who has now played some of the country's best competition as it prepares to make a run for a Big 12 title.
