THE BASICS
The Oklahoma State track and field team will send its qualified athletes to Fayetteville, Arkansas, to represent OSU at the 2021 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship. In a rare season overlap, Oklahoma State, along with the rest of the country, has prepared its qualified athletes to make the trip to Fayetteville, while the cross country season comes to a close on March 15 and the outdoor track and field season is just getting started. The championship, hosted by the University of Arkansas, will be held March 11-13 at the Randal Tyson Track Center. This year's championship will be a closed event and fans will not be allowed in attendance.
THE NATION'S BEST
A total of six Pokes will represent the orange and black on the national stage after a condensed indoor season:
Ariadni Adamopoulou (Pole Vault; No. 6 Seed)
Adamopoulou's second year with the Cowgirls has been every bit as impressive as her first. The sophomore hailing from Athens, Greece, broke her own personal best, school record in three-consecutive meets in the 2021 indoor season. Her season best 4.37m mark from the Texas Tech Shootout puts her in a close second in the Big 12.
Juan Diego Castro (800 Meters; No. 7 Seed)
After a stellar sophomore season, particularly in the mile, Castro has expanded his repertoire on the track and focused in on the 800 meters. His championship-qualifying, personal best 1:47.98 pace from the Texas Tech Shootout is the second-fastest in Cowboy history.
Women's DMR (No. 4 Seed)
Although a number of Cowgirls could combine to compete in the women's DMR for Oklahoma State for the indoor season finale, the quartet of Gabby Hentemann, Christina Ollison, Stephanie Moss and Taylor Roe was the group to qualify OSU in the four seed. Their time of 10:57.60 is the second fastest in program history and led the Big 12 this season.
THE LAST TIME OUT
Just as the qualifiers for the 2020 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championship were being finalized, the COVID-19 pandemic put the world on pause and kept OSU and the rest of the country from indoor competition for nearly a year.
Dating back to 2019, Oklahoma State was well represented at the NCAA championship. The Cowgirls' performances were highlighted by a third-place finish by the DMR unit of Molly Sughroue, Nicolette Dixon, Kaylee Dodd and Sinclaire Johnson. The All-American quartet finished in a school-record time of 10:55.01. On the men's side, Cowboy legend Jacob Fincham-Dukes closed out the indoor chapter of his record-breaking career at Oklahoma State with a fourth-place finish in the long jump, recording a 7.94 meter mark.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS
In a year of unprecedented change and uncertainty for college athletics and for the world as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, Oklahoma State track and field lost out on the opportunity to compete to the fullest extent in 2020. With a renewed fervor and a fully loaded lineup, Oklahoma State and its NCAA Division I competitors will close out the 2020-21 indoor season with great pride and collective optimism after successfully navigating a full season schedule in the face of unparalleled adversity.
