Oklahoma State Game Notes
• The Basics
Phillips 66 Bedlam Round 1 was an instant classic. In a performance for the ages, Oklahoma State star Cade Cunningham dropped 40-points and 11 rebounds to lift the Cowboys to a 94-90 overtime win in Norman. But just 54 hours later, the two rivals will take the court for Round 2, this time in Stillwater. The Big Monday showdown can be seen on ESPN with Bob Wischusen and Fran Fraschilla on the call, and fans can listen to Dave Hunziker and John Holcomb on the Cowboy Radio Network.
• About That Performance
Cade Cunningham's 40-point, 11 rebound game in Bedlam Round 1 was the first 40-10 game against an Associated Press top-10 team since Marquette's Steve Novak (41-16) on January 3, 2006 against No. UConn. It was just the eighth 40-point game in Oklahoma State history, and the third most ever in a Bedlam game (most in a victory). Cunningham is the first freshman to score 40 points in a Division I game this season. The last 40-point performance from a Cowboy also came in a Bedlam game when freshman Jawun Evans scored 42 points in GIA on Jan. 13, 2016.
• Gaudy Resume
The Cowboys are building one of the nation's most impressive NCAA Tournament resumes. Oklahoma State owns seven N.E.T. Quadrant-1 victories, which is tied for the second-most nationally behind only Illinois. The Cowboys also own five wins over Associated Press top-25 squads, which is tied for the 4th most. OSU's seven road wins are also tied for the 8th most among N.E.T. top-100 squads. ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi has OSU as a No. 8 seed, while CBS Sports' Jerry Palm sees the Cowboys as a No. 4 seed and BracketMatrix (which averages the nation's bracketology sites) has OSU as a No. 6.
Notable Road Wins: No. 7 Oklahoma, No. 13 Texas Tech, Wichita State, Marquette
Notable Home Wins: No. 6 Kansas, No. 6 Texas, No. 18 Texas Tech, Arkansas
• March Is For Mike
The Cowboys have shown a remarkable ability to peak at the right time under Mike Boynton. The Cowboys are 9-4 in the official month of college basketball - March. Oklahoma State enters March riding a four-game win streak and a 5-2 record in January. In 2019-20, the Cowboys won eight of their last 11 games, with the three losses coming at KenPom top-10 squads. In 2017-18, Boynton and the Cowboys won four games in March on their way to the NIT quarterfinals.
