Oklahoma State Game Notes
• The Basics
RV/22 Oklahoma State will close out a rare three-game homestand against 15/11 Texas Tech in a key Big 12 contest in Stillwater. This is the rematch between the Cowboys and Red Raiders after OSU took the first meeting in Lubbock, 82-77, in overtime. The game can be seen on ESPN with Jon Sciambi and Fran Fraschilla on the call, and fans can listen to Dave Hunziker and John Holcomb on the Cowboy Radio Network.
• Poll Presence
After a week at No. 23 in the Associated Press Top-25, Oklahoma State just missed the Feb. 15 rankings by four points and appears at the top of the list of "Others Receiving Votes". However, the Cowboys remained at No. 22 in the USA Today Coaches Poll, where they have been ranked for three straight weeks. This is OSU's highest position in that poll since the Pokes were No. 19 on Feb. 3, 2014.
• Postseason Resume
The Cowboys are building an impressive NCAA Tournament resume. Oklahoma State owns six road wins, which are tied for the ninth most among NCAA N.E.T. top-100 squads, and OSU's 5-4 mark in N.E.T. Quadrant-1 games is tied for the eighth most Q1 victories. OSU has notable road wins at No. 13 Texas Tech, Wichita State and Marquette, and home wins over No. 6 Kansas and No. 6 Texas. ESPN bracketologist Joe Lunardi has OSU as a No. 8 seed, while CBS Sports' Jerry Palm and BracketMatrix (which averages the nation's bracketology sites) both have the Cowboys as a No. 7.
• The Future Is Bright
OSU is having success with one of the nation's youngest rosters. According to KenPom, OSU ranks 322nd nationally in experience with an average of 1.11 years per player. In the Big 12, only K-State (1.03) has a younger roster. The Cowboys have a combined 27 starts by freshmen in 2020-21, which are the 15th most nationally.
• The Series With The Cyclones
The series between Oklahoma State and Iowa State dates back to 1918, and after 134 meetings OSU leads the all-time series, 68-66. OSU has taken the last three meetings, and is looking for its first four-game winning streak in the series since 2009-11. OSU owns a 39-18 lead in the series in Stillwater, but In Ames the Cyclones lead the series 41-16. The Cowboys took the matchup in the opening round of the 2020 Big 12 Championship thanks to an Isaac Likekele coast-to-coast bucket with 3.8 remaining, while OSU pulled away from a short-handed Cyclones squad for an 81-60 win in Hilton Coliseum back in January.
• Usually A Nailbiter
Regardless of record or venue, Oklahoma State and Iowa State always seem to play down to the wire. Eleven of the last 18 meetings between these two schools were determined by nine points or less, including six by five points or fewer and three in overtime. The meeting in the 2020 Big 12 Championship opening round saw three lead changes in the final 20 seconds.
• The Series With Texas Tech
OSU owns a 46-23 edge against Texas Tech in a series that dates back to 1937. Thanks to OSU's win in Lubbock in January, the Cowboys have taken the last two meeting against ranked Red Raider squads. The Cowboys own a 24-5 mark against the Red Raiders in Stillwater, including wins in 15 of the last 17 meetings.
• Suttons Well Represented
Former Oklahoma State player (1990-92), assistant coach (1993-06) and head coach (2006-08) Sean Sutton joined the Texas Tech staff as an advisor to head coach Chris Beard in 2017. In 15 seasons in all capacities in Stillwater the Cowboys racked up 11 seasons of 20 or more wins during Sutton's time, including a 39-29 mark as the OSU head coach. Sutton spent six seasons with his brother, Scott Sutton, at Oral Roberts. Scott joined Mike Boynton's coaching staff prior to the 2017-18 season.
• Likekele Target
In five career games against the Red Raiders, Isaac "Ice" Likekele is averaging 9.8 points on 43.2 percent shooting, but the junior has hit his stride in the last two meetings. Likekele has scored 14 and 17 points in the last two matchups against TTU, and is 12-of-25 from the floor with seven boards and three steals in each contest.
