December 04, 2021 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track
FAYETTEVILLE, ARK. - The Oklahoma State men's and women's track teams kicked off their 2021 indoor season at the Wooo Pig Classic in Fayetteville, Ark., on Friday afternoon.Â
Â
The afternoon was highlighted by Taylor Roe and Alex Stitt each setting school records in the women's 3000m and the men's 1000m runs, respectively.
Â
Roe edged out the previous 3000m record by a tenth of a second, posting a blistering time of 8:58.58, which also set the meet record for the event. The previous mark of 8:58.68 had been held for more than 36 years by Cowgirl legend Christine McMiken.
Â
Also racing for the first time in an OSU Indoor uniform were Cowgirl distance runners Grace Ping, Amelia Jauregui, Abby Pickett, Krystal Rodriguez and Jinah Mickens-Malik.Â
Â
Ping, Jauregui and Pickett each ran the mile at the start of the day, placing fifth, seventh and ninth, respectively while Rodriguez ran in the 1000m run. Mickens-Malik competed twice on the day, running in both the women's 600m and the women's 4x400 relay.
Â
Rounding out the competitors for the Cowgirls were Gabija Galvydyte, Lilly Lavier and Mackenzie Michael, who each ran the women's 1000m run as well as the 4x400m relay with Mickens-Malik.Â
Â
Galvydyte was edged out by hair at the line in the women's 1000m run, placing second with a time of 2:46.80, which matched the winning time in the event.
Â
On the men's side, Gabe Simonsen was first individual to compete for OSU's indoor team this season as he finished his first career race in a Cowboy uniform by completing the mile in 4:13.52.
Â
Following Simonsen were Stitt and Daniel Nickell, who each took part in the men's 1000m run. Stitt's time of 2:21.89 broke the previous 1000m mark set by Joshua Thompson back in 2017. Stitt was followed by tenth-place Nickell, who finished the event with a time of 2:26.64.
Â
The 3000m run was the best event for the Cowboys on the day with Jonas Price and Will Muirhead grabbing the top two spots in the event with times of 8:11.80 and 8:19.90, respectively.Â
Â
Triston Read opened his 2022 slate by competing in the 600m run, posting a time of 1:20.62 in a 12th place finish.
Â
Victor Shitsama rounded out the events for the Cowboys, solidifying a personal-best indoor 5000m time of 13:58.95 in a loaded field that consisted of several cross country All-Americans from a couple weeks ago in Tallahassee.
