2022 Oklahoma State Softball Position Preview - Outfield
December 20, 2021 | Cowgirl Softball
A third consecutive trip to the Women's College World Series seems attainable for Oklahoma State in 2022. As the countdown to the season continues, check back in regularly at okstate.com for a breakdown of the Cowgirls' roster by position group. A look at the outfield:
Anchored by a returning All-American and two returning All-Big 12 performers, the OSU outfield is loaded with proven talent.
Â
Hayley Busby, Chyenne Factor, Chelsea Alexander and Michaela Richbourg are likely to feature prominently, but in Avery Hobson, Scotland David, Katelynn Carwile and Hailey Kastl, coach Kenny Gajewski has additional talented options.
Â
Busby looks to build off a 2021 season in which she earned third-team All-America honors after setting a single-season OSU record with a .794 slugging percentage. Her 19 home runs last year were just one shy of tying the school record. Her power makes her a threat, but add in that she also batted .376 a season ago and it becomes clear why she is one of the nation's most dangerous hitters for 2022.Â
Â
With 126 career starts to her credit, Factor was a starter on Cowgirl WCWS teams in 2019 and 2021 and should be a leader on this year's team as well. A first team NFCA All-Region and second-team All-Big 12 selection in 2021, Factor is a career .332 hitter with 15 home runs and 78 runs batted in. She is among the team's most dependable all-around performers.
Â
Entering her final season of college ball, Alexander has played alongside some of the greatest offensive talents in program history in Sydney Pennington, Alysen Febrey, Samantha Show, Busby and others, but it's time she received her due. Among left fielders in Cowgirl Softball history, Alexander ranks No. 1 with a career batting average of .317, a career slugging percentage of .422 and a career on base percentage of .403. Her .373 batting average and her .452 on base percentage in 2021 both represent the best single-season marks for an OSU left fielder. On top of her performance at the plate, she is also a threat on the bases, with 35 stolen bases in 40 career attempts.Â
Â
The powerful Richbourg rounds out the veteran core of OSU's outfield. Richbourg was an All-Region selection in 2019 after blasting 14 home runs that season. For her career, she has a career .501 slugging percentage and is a threat to go deep at any time.
Â
Carwile is a candidate to provide depth to the outfield. She saw action in 13 games in 2021, both as a field player and as a pitcher. With a few notable offseason additions to the pitching staff and a solid showing from Carwile in the Cowgirls' 2021 fall slate, the coaches have embraced her playmaking ability in the outfield, where she'll likely be the go-to option off the bench.Â
Â
Hobson, David and Kastl are speedy utility players who could factor into OSU's outfield plans. Hobson and David both saw good action primarily as pinch runners in 2021 and Kastl is a similar athletic talent who may be employed on the basepaths at times.Â
Â
With proven production and quality depth, the Oklahoma State outfield figures to play a significant role in the Cowgirls' 2022 WCWS aspirations.
