Cowgirl Tennis Completes Busy Day Of Play At Big 12 Fall Invite

STILLWATER -Â Oklahoma State's women's tennis team opened play at the Big 12 Fall Invite at the Greenwood Series Tennis Center today.Â
The morning started with doubles, where two Cowgirl duos advanced to tomorrow's quarterfinals. Oona Orpana teamed up with Dariya Detkovskaya and defeated Rosanna Maffei and Iona Gheorghita of Kansas State, 8-4. Mhai Sawangkaew and Ayumi Miyamoto took down West Virginia's Michaela Kucharova and Kendall Kovick, 8-6.Â
The tournament layout consists of three flights in singles. Orpana, Miyamoto and Sawangkaew each competed in Flight A, while Detkovskaya and Sofia Rojas represented the Cowgirls in Flight B.Â
Orpana dominated the day. Following her win in doubles, the freshman took down Avelina Sayfetdinova of Texas Tech in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Shortly after, Orpana defeated Oklahoma's Ivana Corley, 6-1, 6-4, to advance to tomorrow's Flight A semifinal.Â
Sawangkaew also went undefeated on the day with a win in singles after opponent retirement followed by a thrilling, 5-7, 6-4, [11-9] victory in the quarterfinals over Texas Tech's Margarita Skriabina.
Rojas defeated Ioana Gheorghita of Kansas State, 6-1, 6-3 to advance on to the quarterfinals, where she was defeated by Oklahoma's Alexandra Pisareva, 6-2, 6-3.Â
Detkovskaya fell to Texas Tech's Olivia Peet, 3-6, 6-2, [10-6] before advancing in the consolation following her opponent's walkover.Â
Miyamoto lost both singles matches on the day, first to Sofia Smagina of Kansas, 2-6, 6-3 [10-2]. Shen then dropped her consolation match to Oklahoma's Emma Staker, 6-4, 6-4.Â
In doubles, Rojas teamed up with West Virginia's Camilla Bossi, and they were defeated, 8-4, by Texas Tech's Olivia Peet and Metka Komac.
