Cowgirl Culture: Sofia Rojas
October 18, 2021 | Cowgirl Tennis
Due to Covid-19, the college search was tough for high school graduates of 2021, but Sofia Rojas has found a home in Stillwater.
Â
Rojas attended an all-sports summer camp when she was seven and her love for tennis was born.
Â
Born in Lawrenceville, Georgia, Rojas moved to Sarasota, Florida, in middle school and attended an online academy while training in Bradenton, Florida.
Â
As the years went on, Sofia started competing in international junior ITF tournaments. Rojas always wanted to play in college and says she knew she had the skills when she found success in tournaments at 16 years old.
Â
Several things shed light on the Cowgirl Culture around the nation. For example, professional tennis player Marie Bouzkova's coach, a friend of Chris Young's, also knew Rojas, talked to her about Oklahoma State, and helped get her in touch with the program.Â
Â
"I contacted Chris and we got in touch and talked," Rojas said. "After a few months, I made the decision to come here. I liked that all the players were very good. It just seemed like the right environment."
Â
Since being here, Rojas has meshed well in the program. She's enjoying the coaches and culture that is Oklahoma State.
Â
"They are different coaching styles," Rojas said. "Jaime's more fiery on the court and that's a good contrast with Chris. Chris is motivating and creates a relaxed environment that's also intense. They are a great contrast and we all can learn a lot from both of them."
Â
In addition to enjoying the coaching staff, Sofia loves her new team. Rojas likes that everyone comes from different walks of life and thinks that makes them so close as a group.
Â
"I like that everyone is close," Rojas said. "Everyone is always working together as a close family. I like the smaller group and how we're all connected and working together for one thing. It shows how well we can connect no matter the differences. We all come from different places, but we still have strong connections."
Â
In the fall season, many Cowgirls, including Rojas, have experienced success in professional tournaments. There is much to look forward to this season, but Rojas knows there is always room to improve.
Â
"I'm excited about our team this season," Rojas said. I love the individual tournaments. Through these two tournaments I've played, I've seen what I need to work on for the spring because this level is higher. I'm excited to grow from now until the spring and continue to grow after. I'm looking forward to being at a good level by team competition."
Â
As for the rest of the team, Rojas had this to say: "I think we're all in a good place, but have things we can each improve on. We are good at keeping each other positive and uplifted and cheering each other on and showing support in practice. That is very important for the season and for competing."
Â
Rojas is majoring in construction engineering technology. Her goal was to be an architect, but she's decided to take the construction engineering route.
Â
Rojas wants all Cowgirl fans to know the three freshmen will bring a lot of new energy and there is a lot to be excited about this season.
Â
"We're all from different parts of the world and are all great competitors," Rojas said. "Expect an exciting season."
