Oklahoma State Game Notes
• The Basics
A short-handed Oklahoma State squad gave No. 2 Baylor a battle in Stillwater, but ran out of gas in the second half on Saturday night. The Cowboys were playing their first game since Jan. 12 and dressed just eight players. Among those sidelined were star guard Cade Cunningham and Rondel Walker, who remain day-to-day. A quick turnaround awaits OSU, who will fly to Ames, Iowa on Sunday afternoon to face Iowa State. The Cowboys have taken the last two meetings with the Cyclones in a series that could hardly be tighter. After 133 meetings dating back to 1918, OSU has a slight 67-66 edge. Monday's game can be seen on ESPN2 with Kevin Connors and Chris Spatola on the call, and fans can listen to the game with Dave Hunziker and John Holcomb on the Cowboy Radio Network.
• The Resume Is Growing
The Cowboys are building one of the nation's most impressive NCAA Tournament resumes. Oklahoma State is 4-3 in N.E.T. Quadrant-1 games. The four victories are tied for the fourth most nationally and the seven total games against Q1 squads are tied for the eighth most. They also own a 2-3 record against the AP Top-25. What's more, OSU has been impressive on the road with victories at K-State, No. 13 Texas Tech, Wichita State, Marquette and UT Arlington. The Cowboys own a 5-1 record away from Stillwater, which is tied for the eighth most road wins in the country. OSU's lone road loss this year came at 4/4 Texas by just three points.
• Be MORE Aggressive
Mike Boynton had a request of Isaac "Ice" Likekele following OSU's three-point loss at Texas on Dec. 20. The All-Big 12 selection was averaging 10.8 points on 60.0 percent shooting, but was tied for fourth on the OSU roster in field goal attempts. Boynton told Likekele that in order for the Cowboys to succeed, they needed him to be more aggressive - "you don't have to lead the team in shots, but you can't be fourth or fifth either." Since that talk, Likekele is averaging 14.6 points and 4.2 assists on 49.1 percent shooting, and second on the Cowboys in field goal attempts behind only Cade Cunningham. In the Baylor game, Likekele became just the 17th Cowboy to ever reach 300 career assists, and he's just the seventh OSU player with over 300 dimes, 400 rebounds and 100 steals.
• Boone On The Block
Kalib Boone faced the OSU media on Jan. 7 and was brutally honest about his inconsistent performances for the Cowboys. At the time, Boone was averaging 6.4 points and 4.2 rebounds on 61.1 percent shooting, but inconsistent play frustrated the Tulsa, Oklahoma native and led to more time on the OSU bench. He and Boynton had a heart-to-heart talk about it, and since that chat he's posted a 14-point game at K-State and a career-high 21 points and seven boards against Baylor. Over the last three games, Boone is averaging 12.3 points on 62.1 percent shooting.
• The Series With The Cyclones
The series between Oklahoma State and Iowa State dates back to 1918, and after 133 meetings OSU leads the all-time series, 67-66. OSU has taken the last two meetings, but ISU has taken eight of the last nine games in Hilton Coliseum. OSU owns a 39-18 lead in the series in Stillwater, but In Ames the Cyclones lead the series 41-15. The Cowboys took the matchup in the opening round of the 2020 Big 12 Championship thanks to an Isaac Likekele coast-to-coast bucket with 3.8 remaining.
• Always A Nailbiter
Regardless of record or venue, Oklahoma State and Iowa State always seem to play down to the wire. Eleven of the last 17 meetings between these two schools were determined by nine points or less, including six by five points or fewer and three in overtime. The last meeting saw three lead changes in the final 20 seconds.
