WATCH: Gundy Meets With Media
STILLWATER - For the fourth consecutive season, the Oklahoma State football team is unbeaten through two games, but the difference this year is how the Cowboys have reached this point.
Â
"We're 2-0 because in the first two games our special teams has been very good," head coach Mike Gundy said. "We certainly haven't done enough on offense to win games and our defense has played well, but our special teams has been the deciding factor in the first two games."
A walk-on from Australia, redshirt sophomore Alex Hale has connected on each of his five field goal attempts. His three field goals were the difference in the win against Tulsa and he added two more in the first half against West Virginia.
Â
"He's been really good," Gundy said. "I don't know with kickers and punters. I don't have any idea what makes them tick. He doesn't say much, he's very calm, got good composure, he doesn't get rattled and they tell me his technique is good."
Â
The OSU defense has also done its job through the first two games. The Cowboys have been outspoken about how good this unit can be in 2020 and have backed it up to this point, allowing just 10.0 points per game so far this season.
Â
"At this point they are playing fast, they're coming together as a group and they're playing reckless," Gundy said. "They can have success if they practice hard each week. It's the old coaches cliché but it is what it is. If they bust their butts and practice hard, then they can keep playing well."
Â
Linebacker Amen Ogbongbemiga has been an important part of the success for the Cowboy defense. Along with being the quarterback on his side of the ball, Ogbongbemiga is tied for the team lead with 17 tackles.
Â
"He is a very intelligent player," Gundy said. "He helps to set the defense, is playing with great effort and he has been productive. He is making a lot of tackles."
