Honoring Our WCWS Heritage - 1982
May 29, 2020 | Cowgirl Softball
After three-consecutive appearances in the Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (AIAW) National tournament in 1980, '81 and 1982, Oklahoma State advanced to the first-ever NCAA Women's College World Series in 1982 with a sweep of Cal Poly-Pomona in the Stillwater Regional.
With the two national tournaments interlocking, it was a busy month of May for the Cowgirls. OSU advanced through the Southwest AIAW Tournament in Oklahoma City to qualify for the national tourament. A week later, the Cowgirls were hosting the Broncos in Stillwater.
Four days later, OSU headed down to Norman to compete in the AIAW Women's College World Series. The Cowgirls stomped through the first three games, shutting out Western Illinois (7-0), Utah (2-0) and California (3-0). A 2-1 victory over Michigan sent Oklahoma State into the finals against Texas A&M.
A two-day rain delay postponed the tournament, with the Aggies needing two wins over the Cowgirls since they were coming out of the loser's bracket. A 4-1 victory sent the series into an if-necessary game.
OSU led 3-2 going into the seventh inning of game two, but a double and an error set up the tying run. The Aggies scored two more in the eighth and held the Cowgirls scoreless for the 5-3 win.
The next morning, Oklahoma State left Stillwater at 7 am to make the trek to Omaha, Neb., for the NCAA WCWS, as the Cowgirls were scheduled to play UCLA at 7 pm that evening.
Oklahoma State scored first on Paula Smith's RBI single in the second inning. The Cowgirls held the Bruins scoreless until the bottom of the seventh when UCLA tied the game with the help of an OSU error. Oklahoma State threatened in the ninth and 10th innings, advancing a runner to third each time, but failed to push across the go-ahead run. UCLA centerfielder Gina Vecchione singled to lead off the Bruins' 13th. A double by designated player Sheila Cornell moved Vecchione to third, and Barbara Young singled to left for the 2-1 victory.
The loss gave OSU a much-needed day off on Friday, and the Cowgirls faced Fresno State in an elimination game on Saturday. After a scoreless game through 13 innings, the Bulldogs' Kim Muratore hit a run-scoring double for a 1-0 victory, ending the Cowgirls season. It was a tough road for OSU to follow, as UCLA won the first-ever WCWS and Fresno State finished second.
Oklahoma State fell one win shy of its second-straight 40-win season, ending the year with a 39-15 mark. However, it was the first of many appearances in the Women's College World Series, something those Cowgirls will never forget.
