WATCH: Reason to Believe
May 13, 2020 | Cowgirl Softball
"There's no reason we shouldn't be better than we were this past year." - Alysen Febrey
Â
STILLWATER – Things were looking good for the Oklahoma State softball team before the 2020 season was shut down due to the global pandemic.
Â
Fresh off appearing in the Women's College World Series the previous season, the Cowgirls of 2020 ranked third in the NCAA in team earned run average, were 11th nationally in home runs hit and were riding a 12-game winning streak at the time of the shutdown. OSU was ranked as the No. 8 in the nation according to the NCAA RPI metric.
Â
There was real belief that this team was special.
Â
Prior to the season, a pair of senior transfers, Alysen Febrey and Carrie Eberle, had both joined the program with the goal of winning a championship. As Cowgirls, they were proving themselves as dominant national-level performers.
Â
The pieces appeared to be in place.
Â
Then came the news of the season being canceled, which produced a significant question - would seniors like Febrey, Eberle, Logan Simunek and others be robbed of the opportunity to have a proper finish to their final season? Â
Â
In the following weeks, the NCAA ruled that seniors from spring sports are eligible to return for competition in 2021.
Â
So what does that mean for Cowgirl softball moving forward?
Â
It means that with a roster loaded with established standout performers, 2021 carries with it great hope and promise.
