Maxwell Tosses a No-No in Mizuno Classic Finale
March 08, 2020 | Cowgirl Softball
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State softball team extended its winning streak to 11 games after an 11-0 victory against Missouri State in the final game of the Mizuno Classic.
With the win, the Cowgirls (18-5) complete their second straight perfect weekend to remain undefeated at home. OSU has been clicking on all cylinders all weekend and Sunday against the Bears was no exception.
In the circle, Kelly Maxwell added to her already-impressive resume with a no-hitter against Missouri State. The redshirt freshman struck out eight batters and gave up two walks for her sixth win of the season. With an incredible perfect game in her collegiate debut earlier this season, Maxwell becomes the second OSU pitcher since Lauren Bay in 2002 to pitch a perfect game and a no-hitter/perfect game in the same season.
"It's awesome here, I love it," Maxwell said. "The fans, the atmosphere, my team, all the girls. It's really easy to play in front of them and be able to pitch."
The top of the order continues slugging away with Alysen Febrey and Kiley Naomi both crushing a ball out. In the first inning, Febrey wasted no time getting the Pokes on board with her fourth home run of the weekend and her team-leading 11th homer of the season. Naomi kept the pressure on with a two-run blast in the second. With a comfortable lead heading into the fourth, the Cowgirls weren't satisfied and tacked on six more runs via five hits and a couple of walks.
"We had a really good weekend," head coach Kenny Gajewski said. "I feel like we have been working hard on our offense. We've pitched well all year. Under the conditions with the wind, we had all weekend long, the performance our pitchers had was unreal."
Up next, the Cowgirls play their first midweek matchup of the year on Wednesday against Wichita State at 6 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPN+.
