STILLWATER — Oklahoma State mashed five home runs in its midweek series opener against Saint Louis Tuesday en route to a 22-4 win at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
The Cowboys racked up 20 hits, with Brock Mathis clubbing a pair of homers and Hueston Morrill, Kaden Polcovich and Cade Cabbiness also going deep, as they improved to 12-5, including a 9-1 mark on their home field.
Polcovich led the way offensively as he finished just a single shy of the cycle and tallied seven RBIs, the most by a Cowboy since Christian Funk drove in eight runs against Kansas in 2018.
Cabbiness and Mathis also shined hitting back-to-back in the order. Cabbiness was 4-for-6 with a double and homer and tied a career high with four RBIs, while Mathis was the first OSU player to go deep twice in a game this season and finished 3-for-4 with five RBIs.
Kale Davis picked up the win on the mound to improve to 2-0 as the freshman came out of the bullpen in the fourth and worked two innings, allowing one run and striking out a pair. He was one of five pitchers used by the Cowboys, with John Kelly striking out a career-best six over the final two innings.
OSU got the scoring started with a five-run rally in the second inning. Max Hewitt scored the first run of the game on a throwing error before Mathis' first round tripper, a two-run shot to left field, made the score 3-0. Polcovich plated the final two runs of the frame with a two-out, two-RBI double.
The Cowboys continued to pile up runs in the third, using a three-run homer by Mathis and solo bomb by Morrill to take a 9-0 advantage.
The lead reached 12-0 in the fifth with the Pokes getting an RBI double from Caeden Trenkle and an RBI triple from Polcovich.
A seven-run sixth inning put the game even further out of reach as the Cowboys sent 11 batters to the plate and recorded six hits, the big blow a grand slam by Polcovich.
OSU's final runs of the night came via a three-run homer off the bat of Cabbiness in the eighth.
The two teams conclude the series Wednesday at 4 p.m.
