Oklahoma State Game Notes
• The Basics
Oklahoma State opens its final homestand with an opportunity to make a run up the Big 12 Conference standings, but it will have to contend with a resurgent Iowa State squad on Saturday. With three regular season games to play, OSU is just three games back of fourth place in the standings. Iowa State, which has won two of its last four games despite the loss of do-it-all guard Tyrese Haliburton, is one game above the Cowboys in the table. OSU has revived postseason chances thanks to a healthy lineup and a paint-centric gameplan. Fans will want to arrive early to help Oklahoma State recognize its six seniors for their contributions to the program prior to Saturday's tipoff.
• On the Air
Saturday's game against Iowa State will air on ESPNU with Clay Matvick and King McClure the call. Tipoff is slated for 3 p.m. CT, and the webcast can be seen on the WatchESPN app or ESPN.com/Watch. As always, Dave Hunziker and John Holcomb will have the Cowboy Radio Network call.
• Paying Tribute To Seniors
OSU will celebrate its six seniors with a special pregame senior-day presentation by Cowboy legend Tony Allen. Senior captains Lindy Waters III, Cameron McGriff and Thomas Dziagwa will be joined by Trey Reeves, Jonathan Laurent and J.K. Hadlock. This class has combined for 420 appearances in a Cowboy uniform, 3,265 points and 513 3-pointers. In the last four seasons, OSU took down nine ranked opponents, advanced to the NCAA Tournament in 2017 and made a run in the 2018 NIT. A 2004 All-American at OSU, Allen helped the Cowboys win the 2004 Big 12 regular season and tournament championships en route to the program's sixth Final Four. Allen would go on to play 14 seasons in the NBA and earn six All-Defensive Team honors.
• Seeding Scenarios
With three regular-season games remaining, the Cowboys sit in ninth place at 4-11 in league play but have an opportunity to jump as high as the sixth seed for the Big 12 Championship. OSU is just three games behind the trio of Oklahoma, Texas and West Virginia for fourth place in the standings, and can mathematically jump into sixth place if it wins out and Texas and TCU lose out. Based on win percentage the Cowboys have the "easiest" remaining schedule in the Big 12 (.458 opponent win percentage). If the conference tournament started today, Oklahoma State would play Iowa State in the opening round for the rights to take on either Kansas or Baylor in the quarterfinals. The Cowboys are 12-2 all-time in the first round of the Big 12 Championship.
• The Series With The Cyclones
The series between Oklahoma State and Iowa State dates back to 1918, and Iowa State's win in Ames back in January gave the Cyclones a 66-65 edge in the all-time series. OSU took both regular season meetings with Iowa State in 2018, but the Cyclones returned the favor with a sweep of the Cowboys in 2019. OSU owns a 38-18 lead in the series in Stillwater, although ISU has won in five of their last six trips to Gallagher-Iba Arena. In Ames, the Cyclones lead the series, 41-15, and have won eight of the last nine meetings. The lone OSU win in that stretch - an 80-71 victory on Feb. 27, 2018 - gave Cowboy seniors Mitchell Solomon and Jeffrey Carroll a victory in every conference road venue - a Cowboy first since 1954.
• Always A Nailbiter
Regardless of record or venue, Oklahoma State and Iowa State always seem to play down to the wire. Ten of the last 15 meetings between these two schools were determined by nine points or less, including five by five points or fewer and three in overtime.
