February 26, 2020 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
STILLWATER – Five Oklahoma State track & field student-athletes have been awarded the 2020 Dr. Gerald Lage Academic Achievement Award, the Big 12 conference's highest academic achievement. In total, OSU had 12 student-athletes honored between all sports. With a dozen, OSU was second only to Kansas in total number of recipients.
Three Cowgirls and two Cowboys earned the honor. Anna Gunter, Elliett Kulkin and Katherine Ruck were the Cowgirls honored, while Joshua Anadu and Jake Dyer represented the Cowboys.
This award is in remembrance of Lage, who was the Oklahoma State faculty athletics representative with the NCAA and Big Eight/Big 12 Conference from 1983 up until his death in 2007. Lage served as a chairman three times (1985-86, 93-94 and 2003-04).
Lage joined the OSU family in 1966, serving as an assistant professor in the College of Business Administration. He also served as the director of graduate studies in the economics department (1974-77), head of the department of economics and finance (1978-84), director of OSU Center for International Trade and Development (1985-87), and he was the associate dean of research and graduate programs in the college of business administration.
Student-athletes must have lettered in their respective sport at least once in their career while maintaining residence at their institution for at least one academic year. The honorees may only receive the award once, and must have a 3.80 grade-point average and 100 hours of credit earned when nominated.
Anadu, a junior long jumper for the Cowboys hailing from Katy, Texas, is majoring in environmental science. Dyer, a junior multi-athlete from Whitesboro, Texas, is studying management and marketing. Gunter, a senior distance runner from Bartlesville, Okla., is working towards an accounting degree. From Tulsa, the senior pole vaulter Kulkin is studying health education and promotion. Ruck, a junior distance runner from Moscow, Idaho, is earning a major in hospitality and tourism management.
