Castro Cracks Top Five on OSU's All-Time Indoor 800-Meter List at Alex Wilson Invitational
February 22, 2020 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Juan Diego Castro moved into the top five on Oklahoma State's all-time list in the 800 meters on Saturday afternoon when he ran to a runner-up finish at the Alex Wilson Invitational at the Loftus Sports Center in South Bend, Indiana.
Castro's time clocked in as the fourth-fastest indoor 800-meter race in Cowboy history, finishing in 1:48.87. That time by Castro is currently No. 16 in the NCAA this season. A sophomore from San Jose, Costa Rica, Castro set the Costa Rica national record in the mile at the Razorback Invitational earlier this year before breaking that record again last week at the Husky Classic. Castro already owned the Costa Rican 800-meters record and improved that today by .89 seconds.
"I'm excited for Juan. He has run personal-best times in every race he has run this year and that indicates that there is still more to go," head coach Dave Smith said. "He's in a great position to get his first conference title, we just have to figure out which race we are going to run him in."
The Cowboys also ran their 4x400-meter relay squad of Andrew Merutka, Ashton Hicks, DeJuana McArthur and LaKyron Mays. The quartet ran a new season-best time of 3:08.76 to finish second place and improve their previous mark by. 64 seconds. The Cowboys' time ranks second on OSU's all-time indoor list and is currently the 26th-fastest time in the NCAA this season.
Justin Long competed in the 400 meters for the Cowboys and turned in a runner-up finish with a time of 48.02. Christina Ollison was the lone Cowgirl to compete on the day, running the 400 meters in 54.78 to finish fourth place.
The Pokes will make the trip north to Ames, Iowa, for the Big 12 Indoor Championships next weekend on Feb. 28 and 29.
