PHOENIX – Oklahoma State picked up an impressive road win Tuesday night as the 24th-ranked Cowboys knocked off No. 8 Arizona State, 2-1, at Phoenix Municipal Stadium.
The Cowboys rode the right arm of Brett Standlee and the bat of Cade Cabbiness to victory as they improved to 2-2 on the season; the Sun Devils fell to 2-3.
Standlee tied career highs with eight strikeouts and seven innings pitched and allowed just one run on seven hits while not walking a batter to collect his first win of the season.
Cabbiness finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate and drove in both OSU runs. Kaden Polcovich also had a pair of hits for the Pokes.
OSU jumped out to an early lead in the second inning. Carson McCusker got things started with the first of three consecutive one-out singles for the Cowboys, the third of those an RBI by Cabiness that put the Pokes up 1-0.
The Cowboys doubled their lead via the long ball in the fourth as Cabbiness crushed his first home run of the season, a no-doubt solo shot to right field to make the score 2-0.
ASU finally got to Standlee in the sixth. Spencer Torkelson led off the inning with a double to left and after a single, Alika Williams delivered a sacrifice fly to cut the OSU lead to 2-1.
Standlee came up big in his final inning of work as ASU put runners on the corners with only one out in the seventh before he picked up a strikeout and groundout to end the inning unscathed.
In the eighth, Kale Davis took over in relief for the Cowboys. After walking the leadoff batter, the freshman induced two ground balls to get outs before getting out of the inning with a strikeout.
The Sun Devils made things interesting in the ninth against OSU closer Ben Leeper. Following a throwing error that allowed the leadoff batter to reach base and a sacrifice bunt to move him to second, pinch hitter Brian Kalmer walked to put two runners on with one out.
After a near double play that left runners on the corners with two down, the Cowboys walked Torkelson to load the bases. Leeper then got Trevor Hauver to foul out to seal the win and secure his first save of the season.
The Cowboys return to action Friday for their 2020 home opener against UT Rio Grande Valley; first pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
