STILLWATER – In its 2020 home opener, Oklahoma State took down UT Rio Grande Valley in dominating fashion with a 17-2 win Friday at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium.
With the victory, the 24th-ranked Cowboys improved to 3-2 on the season, while UTRGV fell to 2-3.
Junior Parker Scott pitched a gem in his second start of the year for the Cowboys, allowing just one hit through six shutout innings of work to improve to 2-0. The southpaw recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts, topping his previous best of eight which he set last season against both Kansas and Texas.
The Cowboys were firing on all cylinders on offense, plating 17 runs on 19 hits. Five Cowboys had multiple hits on the night, including four Cowboys with at least three hits. First baseman Alix Garcia had a season-high four hits, while Max Hewitt and Caeden Trenkle turned in their second three-hit games of the season.
In his first action as a Cowboy hitter, freshman Justin Campbell recorded three hits, including a two-run home run in the fourth inning.
Hewitt got the offense going for the Cowboys in the bottom of the third inning with a single through the right side, and Campbell followed it up with a laser single up the middle to put two runners on for the Pokes. Noah Sifrit drove in the first run of the game with a sac fly, and Jake Thompson tacked on an RBI single to give the Cowboys an early 2-0 lead.
The bats stayed hot in the bottom of the fourth as OSU sent 14 batters to the plate and tallied nine runs.
Cade Cabbiness got things started with a double to right center before a Hewitt single put the Cowboys up 3-0. Up next, Campbell sent a ball over the right field wall for his second hit of the night to extend the OSU lead to 5-0.
After Hueston Morrill snuck a hit in over the head of the first baseman, Sifrit tripled to the gap in right center for the Cowboys' fourth straight hit to put the Pokes up by six. Trenkle then pinch hit and recorded the second triple of the inning to score Garcia. Hewitt and Campbell notched their third hits of the game to cap the rally and give the Pokes an 11-0 lead going into the fifth inning.
OSU tacked on three more runs in the fifth. Sifrit secured a multiple-hit night with a single to third base to start the inning, and Kaden Polcovich reached base for the third time, drawing his second of three walks in the contest. Garcia collected his second of four hits with a double to left center past the diving left fielder to score two runs as the Cowboys extended the lead to 14-0 after five innings.
Zach Cable came in to relieve Scott in the seventh inning, and the Vaqueros put their first run on the board before Cable bounced back to end the inning with a flyout and strikeout.
OSU got back on the scoreboard in the bottom of the seventh with singles from Garcia, Trenkle and Carson McCusker, with McCusker's first hit of the night extending the lead to 15-1 before a Hewitt sac fly made it 16-1 with two innings to play.
After a pair of walks in the eighth, Garcia collected his fourth hit to score Polcovich and give the Cowboys a 17-1 lead heading into the final inning.
John Kelly came on in relief of Cable in the ninth inning and surrendered a solo homer to give the Vaqueros their second run of the night. After a follow up single, Kelly forced three consecutive outs to end the game.
The two teams return to action at Allie P. Reynolds Stadium Saturday at 1 p.m.
