Roane Breaks School Record on Day One of Busy Weekend for OSU Track & Field
February 14, 2020 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State track and field teams wrapped up the first day of competition at two meets on Friday evening, as the distance athletes kicked off their weekend at the Husky Classic in Seattle, Washington, while the rest of the team got its weekend started in Lubbock, Texas, at the Texas Tech Shootout.
At the Shootout, Junior Ryan Roane broke the indoor long jump school record with a jump of 6.09 meters, winning the event. It was the second long jump win of the season for Roane, who also won the Bob Timmons Challenge back on December 6. Freshman Sanye Ford also recorded a new personal-best jump in a 13th-place finish. On the men's side, Joshua Anadu finished fifth place in the long jump.
"We needed this day for Ryan, she had struggled a little bit this season. It was awesome to see her compete and get the school record," said jumps coach Zivile Pukstiene. "That's what I know about Ryan going back to the days when I was recruiting her, she's a competitor. It was good to see her get that back, she needed that. Tomorrow is her main event, the triple jump, so the goal is to go out and PR again tomorrow."
In the weight throw, Hannah Bradford finished fifth place for the Cowgirls with a new personal-best throw of 17.11 meters. That mark moved Bradford into seventh place in school history for the event.
In Seattle, Cowgirl freshman Taylor Roe finished third in her heat with a time of 9:33.29 in the 3,000-meter race, good enough for third-fastest in the Big 12 this season. Cowboy freshman Alex Maier ran to a runner-up finish in his 3,000-meter heat in a new personal-best time of 8:07.16, which was also the third-fastest time ran so far in the conference this season. Victor Shitsama also ran a new personal-best time in the 3,000 meters, finishing in 8:12.04.
In the 800 meters, Andrew Merutka set a new personal-best time in a seventh-place finish, crossing the line in 1:52.66. Kobe Christiansen finished 11th for the Cowboys.
The Pokes are back in action tomorrow morning in Seattle and Lubbock for the second day of competition at the Husky Classic and Texas Tech Shootout. Events will start at 11 a.m. at the Texas Tech Sports Performance Center and running will begin at 1 p.m. at the Dempsey Indoor Facility.
