Stark To Become First Cowgirl To Play In Arnold Palmer Cup
December 18, 2020 | Cowgirl Golf
STILLWATER – Fresh off her success at the U.S. Women's Open, Oklahoma State sophomore Maja Stark will become the first Cowgirl to participate in the Arnold Palmer Cup on Dec. 21.
The Ryder Cup-style competition pits the best male and female American and European collegiate golfers against each other. Originally scheduled to be played July 3-5 at Lahinch Golf Club in Lahinch, Ireland, the event was moved to Dec. 21-23 to the Bay Hill Club & Lodge in Orlando, Florida, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Stark dazzled at last week's U.S. Women's Open at the Champions Golf Club in Houston. In her first career major, the Abbekas, Sweden, native tied for 13th after carding a 5-over 289 for the week. Stark made ESPN's SportsCenter Top-10 by holing out from the fairway on No. 6 for eagle.
The Cowgirl is currently ranked No. 9 in the World Amateur Golf Rankings, but has been listed as high as No. 6. Stark has participated in four events as a Cowgirl and has one victory at the Hurricane Invitational in March of 2020.
Since its inception, over 100 former Arnold Palmer Cup alumni have gone on to earn cards on either the PGA Tour, European Tour or LPGA, 29 have represented Europe or the USA in the Ryder Cup or Presidents Cup, and more than 60 have claimed over 250 victories on the PGA or European Tours, including three major championships in 2020. The United States leads the series 12-10-1.
After arriving at the Arnold Palmer Cup, players, coaches, and staff will be tested upon arrival and enter a bubble for the duration of the event. Daily COVID screening will also take place for all players, coaches, staff, and patrons entering the property at Bay Hill Club & Lodge.
