OSU Game Notes
• The Basics
The new era of Cowboy basketball got off to a hot start with a road win at UT Arlington on Wednesday afternoon thanks to some monster performances from Cade Cunningham, Keylan Boone and Isaac Likekele. Cunningham, an AP Preseason All-American and the jewel of OSU's No. 4 ranked recruiting class, posted 21 points and 10 rebounds in his collegiate debut, and helped the Cowboys out-rebound the Mavericks, 54-33. Now, Oklahoma State turns its attention to SWAC favorites Texas Southern. The Cowboys have won 44 straight home openers dating to 1974.
• Double-Double Debut
Cade Cunningham dazzled in his debut with 21 points and 10 rebounds, which made him the first freshman in school history to open his career with a double-double. Cunningham's performance was just the second 20-10 outing by a Big 12 player in his debut game, joining K-State's Michael Beasley in 2007-08. Cunningham's 21 points are the most by a Cowboy in his debut since James Anderson had 29 points against Prairie View A&M on Nov. 9, 2007.
• The Nation's Best Player
Cade Cunningham enters his freshman season with a mile-long list of accolades because of his unique combination of size, vision and play-making ability. The 2020 Naismith High School Player of the Year, Cunningham was the nation's top recruit according to ESPN, 247Sports, Rivals, USA Today and others, and has NBA scouts drooling. The 6-8, 220-pound point guard with a 7-2 wingspan and 10.5-inch hands is one of just 12 players to ever earn a grade of 0.9999 or better in the history of 247Sports (since 2003). That makes him the highest rated point guard in that publication's history.
• Against The Tigers
This will be just the third meeting between Oklahoma State and Texas Southern, and the first since an 86-65 victory in GIA on Nov. 17, 2006. In the first meeting, a talented Tigers squad would take the No. 24 Cowboys to the brink in a 79-77 OSU win in Stillwater. TSU star Charles Price dropped 34 points on 13-of-19 shooting, but Cowboy Byron Houston countered with 24 points and 12 rebounds and Corey Williams added 20 points to hold off the Tigers. That Texas Southern team would go on upset a Bobby Phills-led Southern squad in the SWAC title game and go on to play Georgetown in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.
• Texas Southern Snapshot
Led by former LSU and North Texas head coach, Johnny Jones, the Tigers are the preseason favorites in the SWAC after posting a 12-6 league record a year ago. A trio of Texas Southern players earned Preseason All-SWAC honors in Yahuza Rasas, Justin Hopkins and Chris Baldwin. Former Cowboy Michael Weathers is also a member of the Texas Southern roster. Weathers averaged 9.2 points and 2.8 rebounds per game in 16 appearances for OSU.
• Against the SWAC
Oklahoma State is 26-0 all-time against the current members of the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), with 24 of those wins coming in Stillwater. OSU has neutral-court wins over Alcorn State and Jackson State.
