Complete Notes
Â
The Basics
The Oklahoma State football team (5-2 overall; 4-2 Big 12) hosts Texas Tech (3-5 overall; 2-5 Big 12) at 11 a.m. Saturday in Boone Pickens Stadium. It marks the final home game of 2020, with two road games remaining on the schedule to close out the regular season.
Â
On the Air
The game will be televised by FOX with Joe Davis and Mark Helfrich on the call. The contest will also be carried live on the Cowboy Radio Network, with Dave Hunziker handling play-by-play, John Holcomb providing analysis and Robert Allen reporting from the sideline. Fans outside of the Cowboy Radio Network can listen to the OSU broadcast for free through TuneIn Radio or the TuneIn Radio app.
Â
Honoring Boone Pickens
A statue honoring Boone Pickens will be unveiled prior to Saturday's game. Sculpted out of bronze by Enid-based artist Harold Holden, the nine-foot-tall statue will be located immediately west of the stadium. When that happens, Pickens will become the third person memorialized with a statue on the Oklahoma State campus, joining former president Henry Bennett and OSU's first African-American student, Nancy Randolph Davis. Over the years, Pickens donated close to $600 million to Oklahoma State, split virtually equally between athletics and academics.
Â
In the Rankings
OSU is No. 21 in the Associated Press Top 25 and No. 22 in the Amway Coaches Poll. Including 2020, OSU has reached the top 15 of the AP poll at some point in 11 of the past 13 seasons. OSU has also seen a top 10 ranking in the AP poll at some point in nine of those 13 years. This marks the 12th consecutive week that the Cowboys have been ranked by the AP, which is the eighth-longest streak in school history. The Cowboys are one of four Big 12 teams ranked in the polls, joined by Iowa State, Texas and Oklahoma. Although the College Football Playoff rankings have not yet been released, it is worth noting that OSU has appeared in the CFP rankings four of the past five seasons entering 2020. Texas Tech is not ranked.
Â
The Series
Saturday's game marks the 48th meeting between Oklahoma State and Texas Tech, with the series dating back to 1935. The 2020 season also marks the 25th consecutive year the teams have met. TTU owns a 23-21-3 edge in the all-time series, but Oklahoma State has won nine of the past 11 games. The Cowboys have a 12-8 advantage in Stillwater and have won seven of the past eight matchups played at home. Coach Mike Gundy is 11-4 in his career against Texas Tech, while TTU coach Matt Wells is 1-0 in his career against the Cowboys.
Â
Oklahoma State from a Distance
Oklahoma State is 5-2 overall on the year and is tied with Texas and Oklahoma for second place in the Big 12 standings. The Cowboys can still make the conference championship game by winning out and getting some help from elsewhere in the league. The biggest storylines for the Cowboys this season have been the emergence of the Cowboy defense and the injuries suffered by the OSU offense, in particular the offensive line. OSU's defense has held its first seven opponents to an average of 337.3 yards of total offense per game, which if the season ended today would mark the lowest average allowed by the Cowboys since the 2009 season (332.5). Allowing only 21.1 points per game, OSU ranks 21st nationally and second in the Big 12 in scoring defense. The Cowboys have held their opponents to a combined total of 25-for-102 on third down attempts for an FBS No. 3 conversion rate of 24.5 percent. The OSU defense is also among the national leaders in tackles for loss (No. 9), sacks (No. 10), defensive touchdowns (No. 12) and passing yards allowed (No. 18). On offense, the Cowboys rank among the top three in the Big 12 in rushing yards per game, while wide receiver Tylan Wallace is the league's leading receiver and running back Chuba Hubbard is the conference's third-leading rusher. It's been a balanced team attack overall, as the Cowboys have totaled 1,221 rushing yards and 1,491 passing yards on the year. The OSU offense has been hit hard by the loss of personnel this season. Starting quarterback Spencer Sanders was hurt in the first quarter of the season and missed the next two games, Tylan Wallace missed the game against Kansas State, Chuba Hubbard has been playing with injuries most of the season and eight offensive linemen have been unavailable this year as well. On top of that, kicker Alex Hale missed last week's game after an injury in pregame warmups.
