Cowgirl Softball Picked Third in Big 12 Preseason Rankings

STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State softball team was projected to finish third in the Big 12 conference by the league's coaches, according to the league's preseason poll on Thursday.
OSU received 27 points and slots in at third on the poll, the highest the Cowgirls have been selected to finish since the poll's inaugural year in 2000. Joining OSU in the top three are Texas (29) and Oklahoma (36).
The Cowgirls tallied 13 conference wins in 2019, the program's most since 2003, and finished runner-up in the league for the second-straight year. The Pokes came out on top in five of six conference series last year, highlighted by consecutive sweeps against Kansas, Iowa State and Texas Tech. The sweeps resulted in a nine-game winning streak in conference play, the team's longest since 2010.
Overall, head coach Kenny Gajewski led the 2019 squad to one of the most successful seasons in program history during his fourth year at the helm. The Cowgirls posted a 45-win campaign, the program's most since 1994, and appeared in the Women's College World Series for the first time since 2011.
Despite saying goodbye to key members of the Gajewski era, The Cowgirls have reloaded this offseason and look to continue the trend of success the program has enjoyed in recent years. The 2020 team features several returning players, like junior captain Sydney Pennington, sophomore standouts Chyenne Factor and Kiley Naomi. OSU also landed the best transfer class for the upcoming season with a trio of proven veteran transfers in Carrie Eberle, Alysen Febrey and Hayley Busby.
The first pitch of the 2020 season is just over four weeks away. The Cowgirls open the new decade with a matchup against LSU at the Tiger Classic on Friday, Feb. 8, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
