Oklahoma State Game Notes
• The Basics
Oklahoma State opened Big 12 play with a loss at No. 22/22 Texas Tech on Saturday, and will face another tough test when it hosts No. 16/17 West Virginia on ESPN's Big Monday showcase game. The Cowboys swept both meetings with the Mountaineers last season, and have taken three straight overall in the series. WVU had its four-game win streak snapped at No. 3/3 Kansas, but is led by the imposing frontcourt duo of Oscar Tshiebwe and Derek Culver. The Cowboys are 17-6 in Big 12 home openers.
• On the Air
The Cowboys and Mountaineers will square off on ESPN2 with Bob Wischusen, Fran Fraschilla and Kris Budden on the call. Tipoff is slated for 8 p.m. on Monday, and the webcast can be seen on the WatchESPN app or ESPN.com. As always, Dave Hunziker and John Holcomb will have the Cowboy Radio Network call.
Cowboy Quick Hitters
• 1,000-Point Club Awaits
With his ability to effectively play the 1-4 positions, Lindy Waters III has been the key to OSU's versatility for years. Now, the senior is starting to enter some lofty company that speaks to that versatility. Waters is just seven points shy of becoming the 42nd Cowboy to reach the 1,000 point plateau, which will make him just the 16th OSU player in the 1,000-point, 200-assist, 100-steal club. Marcus Smart and Markel Brown in 2014 were the last to join to this exclusive club, and of the 15 players currently in the club, only Darwyn Alexander (1988-92) and Randy Rutherford (1992-95) can top Waters' career 41.3 career 3-point percentage. Entering Monday's game against WVU, Waters has 993 career points, 209 assists and 102 steals.
• The Series with West Virginia
Oklahoma State has won the last three meetings with West Virginia - and four of the last five - to take an 8-7 lead in the overall series. In 2018-19, the Cowboys earned their first season sweep of the Mountaineers since 2013 and 2014, and coincidentally both games had the same final score, 85-77. The two programs met only once prior to WVU's joining the Big 12 in 2012-13.
• Success In Morgantown
No player on the OSU roster has ever lost in Morgantown, West Virginia. The Cowboys have won three straight games in WVU Coliseum. No other Big 12 team has won multiple games in Morgantown over the last three seasons and no other Big 12 team has an overall winning record in WVU Coliseum, where OSU is 5-2 all-time. Cowboy senior captains Lindy Waters III, Cameron McGriff and Thomas Dziagwa are 3-0 in Morgantown, which makes them the only active players that can make that claim.
• Press Virginia
West Virginia employs a potent defense that ranks No. 5 nationally in defensive efficiency, according to KenPom. The Mountaineers rank fifth in field goal defense by holding opponents to 36.2 percent and their 24.9 3-point field goal defense is the fourth-best mark in the country.
• Hall of Famer in Charge
West Virginia is led by legendary head coach Bob Huggins, who has amassed over 871 wins in his career. He ranks fourth in total victories among active Division I head coaches and has the eighth-most wins in college basketball history among Division I head coaches. He has led West Virginia 11 postseason appearances, including the 2010 Final Four, and is a veteran of 33 career postseason appearances as a head coach.
• Boynton vs Huggins
Mike Boynton's teams are 3-1 as against Bob Huggins-coached squads, but they also have a trio of meetings when Boynton was an assistant coach under Brad Underwood at both OSU and Stephen F. Austin. Boynton was on staff at OSU during the 2016-17 season (split), and he was also on staff at Stephen F. Austin when the Lumberjacks defeated No. 3 seed WVU in the opening round of the 2016 NCAA Tournament, 70-56, at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
