The Basics
- The No. 10 Oklahoma State Cowgirls are hosting three visiting teams for this weekend's ITA Kickoff. This tournament is essentially the first two rounds of the National Team Indoor Championships, which will take place the second week of February in Chicago, Ill.
- The Cowgirls are 4-0 after starting the season with two doubleheaders in Stillwater against Abilene Christian, Central Arkansas, Oral Roberts and Wichita State. Â
- The Cowgirls jumped one spot in the latest ITA rankings to put themselves in the top 10. This makes them the highest-ranked team in the Stillwater bracket of the tournament. Wake Forest is ranked No. 24, while Ohio State is ranked No. 25. San Diego is unranked.
- The ITA Kickoff will be a return to team play for the Cowgirls after Bunyawi Thamchaiwat, Ayumi Miyamoto, Catherine Gulihur, Alana Wolfberg, Dariya Detkovskaya, Lenka Stara and Lisa Marie Rioux all competed in the Freeman Memorial Invitational last weekend.
- In the fall, the Cowgirls swept the ITA Central Regional Championships in the fall as Lisa Rioux and Ayumi Miyamoto defeated teammates Dariya Detkovskaya and Bunyawi Thamchaiwat to claim the doubles title. Rioux was crowned the singles champion over Detkovskaya in the tournament as well.
Las Time Out
- Seven Cowgirls competed in the Freeman Memorial Invitational for individual play last weekend, with No. 29 Bunyawi Thamchaiwat making a run to the singles final of the tournament.
- Thamchaiwat faced off against No. 7 Michaela Jones of Stanford in the finals of the tournament. The Cowgirl would fall in a hard-fought match, 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.
- In doubles, OSU would be represented by two doubles teams in the semifinals of the tournament. No. 17 Lisa Marie Rioux and Ayumi Miyamoto fell to Jones and Sanford of North Carolina, 6-0, in the semifinals, while Bunyawi Thamchaiwat and Lenka Stara would lose to Higuchi and Choy of Stanford, 7-6.
- The Cowgirls played their first four team matches of the season in two days to open the season. They would go on to sweep three of those opponents (Abilene Christian, Central Arkansas and Oral Roberts) and drop just one team point to the other (Wichita State).
A Look at No. 24 Wake Forest
- OSU is 2-1 all time in its meetings with Wake Forest, which includes its last win in 2019 when the two schools met at the Blue Gray Championships.
- The Deacons are 2-0 this season with both of those wins being sweeps over the College of Charleston and Winthrop University.
- Wake Forest will face No. 25 Ohio State in its first match of the ITA Kickoff, which will determine whether it advances to the Championship match or the Consolation match against either Oklahoma State or San Diego.
- At No. 44, Carolyn Campana is the highest ranked individual for Wake Forest. Anna Campana is another ranked individual Wake Forest, as she comes in at No. 82.
- In doubles, Eliza Omirou and MC Meredith are ranked No. 10 in the nation, while Anna Brylin and Saby Nihalani come in at No. 13.
A Look at No. 25 Ohio State
- Oklahoma State is 2-1 all time in its meetings with the Buckeyes, which includes its 4-3 loss in their last meeting in 2017.
- The ITA Kickoff will be the spring opener for the Buckeyes, who are currently ranked No. 25 in the nation.
- Ohio State will face No. 24 Wake Forest in its first match of the ITA Kickoff, which will determine whether it advances to the Championship match or the Consolation match against either Oklahoma State or San Diego.
- Ohio State does not have any doubles teams in the ITA rankings, but it does hail three players in the top 125. Shiori Fukuda is the highest ranked Buckeye at No. 11 in the nation. Irina Cantos Siemers comes in at No. 58, while Kolie Allen rounds out the ITA rankings at No. 125.
A Look at San Diego
- Oklahoma State is 2-1 all time in its meetings with San Diego, all of which have come on the road. The Cowgirls lost the last meeting between the two schools, 5-4, back in 1994.
- San Diego swept Nevada, 4-0, in its first and only match of the season so far.
- San Diego will be the first opponent of the tournament for Oklahoma State. The Toreros will either face Wake Forest or Ohio State in the Consolation or Championship match on Sunday.
- Solymar Colling is the only individual ranked for San Diego, as she comes in at No. 39 in the nation. San Diego does not have any women in the ITA doubles rankings.
Cowgirl Quick Hits
